Ethan Camp, a member of Troop 33 of the Los Padres Council of the Boy Scouts of America, aims to make a difference for one local elementary school through his Eagle Scout project.
An Eagle Scout is the highest rank a scout can earn and includes a significant community improvement project.
Camp, a junior at Santa Barbara High School, is dedicating his Eagle Scout project to constructing a bike trail on the campus of Monroe Elementary School at 431 Flora Vista. Monroe received 40 donated mountain bikes but lacks a dedicated trail on campus where students can ride safely.
Camp worked with Monroe’s Principal Brian Naughton and sought the support of the Monroe PTA for the project. “I attended Monroe,” said Camp, “It’s an excellent school with caring teachers and committed staff.”
Helping the school strengthen its bike-riding programs to develop confident riders was a good fit for Camp. “I’ve been riding my bike to school for years. I know how important it is to be a safe and competent bicyclist, and that takes practice.”
Camp and fellow scouts will use the Monroe Beautification Day on April 9 as the main work day to construct the trail. Prospective volunteers are welcome to contact Monroe to learn more about how to help.
The cost to construct a permanent and safe course is $2,500. Camp is actively fundraising for the project from family, friends, and the local community.
