The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is celebrating nurses countywide during the annual recognition of National Nurses Week. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, on Florence Nightingale’s, the founder of modern nursing, birthday. This year, the American Nurses Association celebrates nurses with the theme, “You Make a Difference”.  For over two years, nurses across all public health and healthcare sectors, have been the difference as they continue to fight on the frontline against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are extremely proud of the resilience, courage, and leadership our nurses have displayed during these challenging times,” shared Paige Batson, Deputy Director for the Community Health Division and Director of Public Health Nursing. “In what has been a truly unprecedented time, our nurses have consistently answered the call to serve the communities most at need in Santa Barbara county.”

As a community, much has been learned from the COVID-19 pandemic as it further revealed the significant health disparities within our community and highlighted the critical role that nurses make in addressing these disparities. Whether in our Health Care Centers or in the community, nurses are saving lives and serving the most vulnerable community members.

In commemoration of National Nurses Week, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is honoring its nurses at the May 10, 2022 Board of Supervisors meeting with Fifth District Supervisor Steve Lavagnino presenting a resolution.
