How did a disaster in Santa Barbara change the way businesses operate?

By Jake Soto

On the 22nd of April, we celebrated the 53rd Earth Day. The event was first organized by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator from Wisconsin. The main purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness about environmental protection and call for action to preserve our planet.

The very first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. On that day, more than 20 million Americans took to the streets to protest against the environmental pollution caused by the oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The spill happened on January 28, 1969, when an oil tanker named Union Oil Platform spilled more than 80 thousand barrels of crude oil into the sea off the coast of Santa Barbara. The oil slick covered more than 845 square miles of ocean and coastline. It killed thousands of birds and marine animals and caused serious damage to the environment.

The Santa Barbara oil spill was a major catalyst that led to the creation of Earth Day. The event helped to raise awareness about the need to protect our planet and its resources. It also showed the power of people to come together and demand change. Today, Earth Day is celebrated all over the world, and it remains an important reminder of our responsibility to care for our planet.

Since the first Earth Day, there have been many changes in the way businesses operate. More and more businesses are looking for ways to become eco-friendly. Manufacturers use advanced technologies to reduce waste and improve efficiency. And, all industries are searching for ways to minimize their impact on the environment. Earth Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in preserving our planet. It is also a day to celebrate the progress we have made in protecting our environment.

In the past, businesses often operated without any regard for the environment. They dumped their waste in the air, water, and land. They used toxic chemicals without thinking about the consequences. But today, things are different. Businesses of all sizes are taking steps to reduce their environmental impact.

Many manufacturing companies have adopted green practices. Some have switched to using recycled materials. Others have started using renewable energy, like solar or wind power. Some manufacturers are even using 3D printing to create products,  which uses less energy and creates less waste than traditional manufacturing methods. While large improvements are required to reduce waste, there are a variety of small changes that everyone can make to help decrease it. For example, software applications that help businesses track their energy use and identify ways to reduce their consumption is a good place to start.

Another area where most businesses can play a part is increasing efficiency. And this can be as simple as updating your systems and automating some processes. Something as simple as bill of materials (BOM) software can make a big difference. In the past, businesses would often create products without really knowing how much inventory they had on hand. This led to a lot of waste because companies would either overproduce or underproduce items. But by having a BOM in place, businesses can more accurately track their inventory levels and produce items only when they need them. This helps reduce waste and keeps inventory levels at a minimum, which is good for both the environment and the bottom line.

Logistics is another area where businesses can make a difference. Previously, businesses would often ship products by truck, which burned a lot of fossil fuels and emitted pollutants into the air. While trucks are still playing a big part in transportation of goods, there are solutions that map all the routes and calculate more optimal ones to take. Many companies are also increasing the use of railroads or even waterways to transport goods. This is not only more environmentally friendly but it can also be more efficient and cost-effective.

Of course, there are still many businesses that operate without any concern for the environment. But thanks to Earth day and the efforts of those who celebrate it, more and more businesses are realizing that they need to take action to protect our planet. As consumers it’s also our responsibility to support companies that make more eco-friendly choices therefore forcing others to follow suit.

Let’s continue voting with our wallets and show businesses that we care about the environment. In the long run it’s a small price to pay for a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations.
