Since the past week or so an individual has literally taken up residence in their car on Goleta library (city owned) property.
A literal mountain of possessions and trash can be seen precariously tied to and spilling over the roof. Readers want to know how this is possible and, legally speaking, why.
You must be new here. It’s pretty much legal to squat anywhere you like in town now as long as you are homeless. You and I can’t camp right on the beach, yet there are tents and busted RVs all along one of the most expensive views in the world. There has been a broken RV in the Goleta library lot for at least this entire year and there are entire communities camping all over town in our most prized tourist spots.
This continues because addiction deniers continue to pretend it’s a “homeless” crisis caused by high rents. The deniers refuse to acknowledge the root cause of the problem and they confound all efforts to transition people into recovery.
You might consider skipping the library period this week. We stopped using the downtown library because of the homeless problem and will now be avoiding Goleta.
