Santa Maria Schools Placed on Lockdown Due to Shooting

Two Santa Maria schools were placed on lockdown Monday due to a nearby shooting.

At 12:21 p.m., Santa Maria Police officers responded to a shooting in the 800 block of North Thornburg.

El Camino Junior High and Robert Bruce Elementary schools were placed under lockdown shortly after the incident. Building doors were instructed to be locked and students and staff were to stay indoors.

Officers discovered a 20-year-old male with a singe gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment and is in stable condition.

The lockdowns were lifted after 1:30 p.m. and the school district states the incident did not take place on campus and students and staff were safe at all times.

Detectives are nvestigating the incident and ask that anyone with information contact Lt. Vega at 805-928-3781 x 2298.
