The Santa Barbara Police Department reports a loaded handgun was taken from a juvenile during a traffic stop.
On Wednesday, the Department stated a semi-automatic handgun and loaded magazine was taken off the street when a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation.
During the traffic stop, a juvenile inside the vehicle was on probation and was in possession of the gun.
The juvenile was arrested for several felony gun related charges.
No further details were available.
Wait, how is this possible? If it was illegal for him to have the gun, he couldn’t have it, right? Is this all some kind of mix-up, or is it proof that gun control doesn’t work? When guns are outlawed, only outlaws have guns? It can’t be…
CHIP – crazy, right? We have laws against rape and murder, yet criminals still do it. Darn those pesky liberal laws!
CHIP, so true! Why have any laws at all?
The point is, if there are already laws making this criminal possessing a firearm illegal, how would more laws have prevented it? Kind of like thinking making rape and murder MORE illegal would somehow help prevent those crimes, which are already illegal, from happening.
“how would more laws have prevented it? ” – Depending on the law, many ways. 1) By making it more difficult for the original purchase to have happened, therefore reducing the chance of this gun having been stolen from or purchased from a negligent, but legal gun buyer. 2) Being more of a serious deterrent to illegally possessing a gun. 3) Reducing the number of available guns in circulation. 4) Lots more…..
Throwing your hands up and saying, “nope, it’s not perfect so let’s do nothing” is no longer an option. Again, the “all or nothing” attitude is outdated and needs to give way to progress, even if it’s not instantly a perfect solution.
Cry Vor, don’t you think that the provenance of the gun may be relevant? We don’t know it. But these objects don’t magically fall out of the sky, right?
Making it harder for law abiding folks to obtain firearms doesn’t do much to stop those who disregard the law. Besides, laws infringing on purchasing, owning, and carrying firearms are generally illegal in our country. Adding further restrictions is a no go, and an assortment of pending litigation is going to dismantle most of the existing restrictions that are in place. However, there is a very simple solution to the problem. Instead of focusing on taking guns off the street, we should instead focus on taking criminals off the street.
Chip of SB–Making it harder for me to get a driver’s license doesn’t make it harder for scofflaws to run a red light, right? You can see you are arguing that laws limiting behaviors don’t make a difference, right? Making it harder for me to rip off my tenants doesn’t stop slumlords from abusing their tenants, right? Your argument has nothing to do with the efficacy of laws.
Mrtndriver, I think that was Chips point exactly. More laws making something more illegal than it already is won’t make it any less likely to occurs. And contrary to Sacjon’s post, won’t make guns already in existence, disappear.
ZERO – An AR-15 is a semi-auto rifle, correct? Please refresh my memory. What is written that states people do not have the right to carry an AR-15?
Most violence w Guns are illegally obtained hand guns. Look it up.
It is proven more laws don’t prevent illegal possession.
Good Parents prevent bad behavior. Hold your kids accountable.
and the kid taken to Juvi and his parents summoned before a judge? right?????
Not taken to juvi. Doesn’t fit the criteria to send to Juvi. Released to parents with a notice to appear is most likely scenario. This is precisely why gangs make the juveniles carry the guns. Because they go without much consequence where an 18+ would get prison time.
