Construction for the Westside Community Paseos Project, which will provide strong walking and biking connections within the Westside, and from the Westside to Downtown, begins on the 600 block of West Mission Street on January 27 and will last for two months in this location.
The total project duration is approximately nine months. Community updates will be provided prior to construction in each location.
The Westside Community Paseos Project (Project) is funded primarily through Active Transportation Program grant funds and will provide strong walking and biking connections within the Westside, and from the Westside to Downtown.
On January 17, Southern California Edison and Lash Construction, Inc. began relocating utility poles along Mission Street, between Modoc Road and San Pascual Street, in preparation for construction.
Beginning January 27, construction for the Project will occur on the 600 block of W. Mission Street and will last for approximately two months. Access will be maintained for residents, although temporary disruptions should be anticipated during construction. A new, separated multiuse path will be constructed that safely connects cyclists and pedestrians to routes on Modoc Road and San Pascual Street.
Work is restricted to occur between 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The city has deliberately slow walked and “hidden” this project along with the Mission Street equivalent. Those pushing it are simply pushing the bicycle lobby agenda. It is not a “Paseo” whatever aesthetic that is supposed to carry. Part of what they are hiding is probably in the word “multiuse” which means that pedestrians will co-mingle with bicyclists. Both Micheltorena and Mission sidewalks are heavily used by locals with children, carts and families. This is an absolute sell out to the few at the expense of the many. The local city council rep, Oscar Gutierrez, was missing in action and allowed this to happen. He should not be re-elected nor allowed to move on to a higher position.
I grew up right there. Managed to get myself to school, DT, and the Pit daily. Why is this need?

We just heard from Chris Sneddon at SB County Public Works yesterday in a meeting with our attorney, that if he didn’t get the easement (highly unlikely) to build the Modoc Road MUP between the 29 palms walking path in Alignment B – 3 football field length distance…that he would cut them down for Alignment A rather than eliminate the current Class II bike lane on the north side of Modoc Road…and, build the MUP in addition…

Telling the CalTrans ATP grant people that replacing this bike lane was necessary for safety reasons is how they got the funds for this project in the first place!!!

Right now, about 55% of the 0.72 mi MUP is up on Modoc Road…
Tons of money and effort, removing beautiful jacaranda trees, to widen the bicycle lane for a block. And then once you go down the slope to the 101 underpass on Mission you are in a bottleneck that forces bicycles right up against the cars again. Another example of prioritizing the bicycle lobby agenda and making the City just a little bit less beautiful for the rest of us.
I still believe a bicycle counter machine should be set up and installed for these projects. These projects that are ruining our city. How is spending all this money and ruining the beauty of our city so vital for so few? How about our elderly and disabled citizens that do not ride bicycles? This is just a money grab.
A big time cluster fudge is taking place with Phase I of the Modoc Road Multi-Use Path project near Arroyo Burro Creek and Modoc Road west towards the road to La Cumbre Country Club…mudslides…asphalt hydrocarbon leachate into the creek…all done without proper environmental review…in fact, the County exempted itself!
