What happens when a New York contemporary choreographer meets authentic Argentine Tango? Santa Barbara DANCEworks will learn the answer this August as choreographer Kate Weare begins her 2017 DANCEworks Residency. Kate Weare makes dances with rawness and precision, dealing with violence, sensuality and interconnectedness through the power and clarity of the moving body. Raised by visual artists in the San Francisco Bay Area, Weare received her BFA from CalArts and danced in Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Belgrade and Montreal before settling in New York City. She founded Kate Weare Company in 2005 and has steadily gained recognition for her uncompromising, articulate choreographic vision.
While in residence, Ms. Weare will embark on a collaboration with artistic director Esteban Moreno of Union Tanguera (FRANCE), on a new work (working title: In Love I Broke Beyond), charting new territory and bringing together artists from Argentinian tango and contemporary dance for a unique cross-pollination of disciplines, cultures and values. Revealing the formal strengths and fascinating differences between Argentine tango and contemporary dance partnering, In Love I Broke Beyond will be performed with live music performed by Argentine composer Gustavo Beytelmann, and explore multiple layers of desire among the five unique dancers, blending genders, personalities, and movement languages to unusual and scintillating effect.

Weare’s interest in Tango dates back to 2008 when she studied for several years in New York with Alicia Cruzado. The foundational principles of Tango partnering and the sensitivity of listening it engenders have made a profound influence on the direction of her choreographic work. Fascinated by collaboration, Weare has commissioned original scores from and performed live with many extraordinary musicians, and collaborated with visual artists Kurt Perschke and Clifford Ross for set design in her dances: Lean-to (2009) Garden (2011) Dark Lark (2013) and Marksman (2016).

Weare received The Guggenheim Fellowship Award in 2014, Mellon Foundation Residency and Commissioning Awards from The Joyce Theater in 2015 and 2011, and a Princess Grace Fellowship for Choreography in 2009. She was the Inaugural Artist-in-Residence chosen for BAM’s Fisher Residency Program in 2013, which marked Kate Weare Company’s BAM debut in The Next Wave Festival. Other recent awards include: White Bird’s Barney Choreographic Prize, Evelyn Sharp CalArts Summer Choreographic Residency Award, Jacob’s Pillow Residency & Commission, First Prize in NYC’s The AWARD Show, Danspace Project Commission, Bates Dance Festival Residency and a MANCC Choreographic Fellowship. Companies worldwide have commissioned Weare’s work, among them Scottish Dance Theater, The Limon Dance Company, ODC Dance, The Juilliard School and GroundWorks Dance Theater. Weare has been a Guest Artist at Princeton University, The Juilliard School, NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University, Keene State University, Marymount Manhattan, among many others.
Union Tanguera
Union Tanguera, founded in 2002, is a French/Argentinean contemporary tango company based in Lyon and Buenos Aires. The company’s works are created and directed by the Co-Artistic Directors Esteban Moreno and Claudia Codega utilizing traditional tango music and dance as the foundation for their creative process. With deep respect to the purity and legacy of tango as a social dance, Union Tanguera seeks to reformulate tango‘s theatrical expression by incorporating elements of contemporary dance and theater.
Gustavo Beytelmann
Gustavo Beytelmann is artistic director of the Tango Department at the Conservatory in Rotterdam. In 2002 he was invited by the Universities of Seattle and Bellingham (USA) to hold masterclasses on his music. In 2004 he participated in the Festival of Tango of Buenos Aires, giving a piano solo recital at the Teatro Colón. Since the season 2005/2006 he has been conducting regular master classes at the Music Academy of Monaco. In August 2008 he is the Composer-in-Residence at the International Moritzburg Festival in Germany.

DANCEworks is an innovative collaboration between SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara and the Lobero Theatre Foundationdesigned to offer notable choreographers in the USA a month-long residency in which to create, rehearse and premiere a brand new work on the Lobero stage. This partnership puts Santa Barbara on the map as a community that supports the creation of new choreography in a significant way. DANCEworks is gaining broad recognition within the world of contemporary dance and has already contributed to the careers of several groundbreaking choreographers: Aszure Barton, Larry Keigwin, Doug Elkins, Brian Brooks, Mark Dendy, Adam Barruch, and Shannon Gillen.
