Internet Television Options

I’m fed up with the fees and recurring price increases from Cox Communications (seriously, why great deals for new customers while current customers keep getting gouged?). So I’m seriously considering closing it altogether, except for keeping the internet since we need it. I have a friend who has tried and likes Sling Tv (or any other internet television option) and I’m curious if any other edhat readers have tried it and what their thoughts are? Also, what speed or level of internet service would be needed for this?

What do you think?

  1. I tried it and wasn’t a fan. I like Hulu much better – their live streaming service is $39.99 and we get every channel we would get with cable service (except for HBO, etc which you can add-on). I have regular, middle-of-the-road speed internet and it works great! If you are a household where people are using multiple devices at once, you might want to increase your speed.

  2. Ed – for baseball, MLB TV is a great app, but all “local” teams (Dodgers and Angels) are blacked out. So, I’ve been using Hulu Live to get around that blackout and now can watch any team I want really.

  3. Just a heads up, they will price increase internet the same as they price increase tv service. Internet from them 8 yrs ago was ~$40/ mo for medium tier internet. same service now is ~$80/mo.

all those services, SLING, hulu, apple tv, roku etc are grabbing content from the internet. they are just interfaces that help you find your content. If you have a recent “smart tv” then most will already be built in to apps loaded into the tv. the benefit of using the “apps” built into a smart tv, you have a remote to control how it works. and its usually part of the TV remote. less remote clutter ( multiple remotes )

for most moderate streaming use, medium tier internet is fine.
