A landslide took down a home in the 1000 block of Las Alturas Road and community members have organized an online fundraiser for the home’s elderly resident.

Storms earlier this year are believed to have caused the landslide that took the single family home at 1037 Las Alturas with it.

The home has been red-tagged and a section of Las Alturas Road has been closed since May 10.

The home’s owner, Jan Luc, has lived in the home since her late-husband built it in the 1970s. She and her two adult sons moved out in March after the home began to shift in February.

Friend and neighbor, Jan Campbell, started the fundraiser to help replace possessions. “We have started this GoFundMe account to help her with stabilizing and replacing some of her possessions. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the disaster, her insurance does not cover any of the damage or replacement costs or temporary living expenses,” wrote Campbell.

Prior to the landslide, Zillow estimated the four-bedroom, three bath Riviera home at $3.36 million.

The closure of the road by the City of Santa Barbara is to protect the remaining utilities in that area. According to KEYT News, there’s a sewer line with a pump station that has been compromised that could cause a problem for the entire Riviera neighborhood.

“Those of us who live in this neighborhood have experienced several major fires and many of us lost our homes. We know all too well how it feels to be without a familiar place to come home to. The loss of family photos and possessions that make life comfortable is dauting for anyone – but particularly for someone in their late 80’s. Jan is a positive and upbeat person and is grateful for any assistance,” wrote Campbell.

    • Aside from deductibles, homeowners insurance only pays to replace that which was there, built to the old building codes. Unfortunately the city requires the new construction to conform to the codes of today, not those of the ’70s. The cost can be more than double….. Same w/ earthquake insurance, but the insurance company exposure may be so large as to allow only partial payment of claims.

      • It still doesn’t explain exactly why “Unfortunately, due to the nature of the disaster, her insurance does not cover any of the damage or replacement costs or temporary living expense.” NONE of it? NOTHING? Something’s fishy, and I’m not sure on which side of the equation…
