La Patera Elementary School in Goleta is excited to announce the refurbishment of its wall ball courts, complete with artist-painted murals. The project, initiated by the school’s PTA and made possible through fundraising, aims to enhance the physical education experience and provide a visually appealing space for students to enjoy.
The wall ball courts were painted on May 6th by three locally trained muralists: DJ Javier, Meiya Sidney and Mia Pelayo Franco. Each artist contributed their unique creative sketches, following direction provided by the school. Students had the opportunity to watch the artists paint during their lunch and recess periods, creating a memorable experience for all.
“I’m thrilled to have the wall ball courts revitalized, thanks to the hard work of the district’s maintenance department and the PTA. The courts are extremely popular and have been used by students for many years. They were in need of repair and new paint, but I never could have imagined they would turn out so incredible. Refurbishing these structures was obviously important, but I’m particularly happy about how beautiful they now look. Art should transcend classroom walls and extend into outdoor spaces as well,” said Brigitte Haley, La Patera’s principal for the preschool through 6th grade school.
Before refurbishment efforts began, the wall ball courts were painted a solid blue color and had many holes and cracks. Now, they showcase a vibrant and interactive mural featuring the school’s Tiger mascot, and a storybook-like landscape of La Patera’s setting which is nestled between Lake Los Carneros and the Santa Ynez Mountains.
“The PTA is really proud to contribute the funds for this project. We’re always looking for ways to inspire the student body to be more active and imaginative. This is a project that benefits every child and I hope it makes a meaningful imprint on their experience and memories made at school,” said Molly Hughes, a parent liaison from the PTA who championed the vision and carried it through.
Wall ball enthusiast and La Patera Elementary School student, Paul Yoder, shared, “The murals are so cool! I think they symbolize our school pride and mascot. I’m excited to play wall ball here with my friends!” His brother, Thomas Yoder, echoed his sentiments with an enthusiastic, “They look so cool!”
Principal Haley also noted the school will be receiving two new Big Toy play structures, a new swingset, and all new classroom furniture this summer as part of district wide school improvements funded with Measure M Bond money.
“The wall ball courts mark just the beginning of a completely revamped playground experience for our students. We can’t wait to see their reactions in the fall!” Haley said.
Parents are encouraged to view the completed murals at the school’s Open House event in mid-May.

DJ Javier
DJ designed and painted the “Ride with Tiger Pride” Mural. DJ Javier grew up in Santa Barbara and graduated from Dos Pueblos High School. School was challenging for him, but he found a successful path through his passion for art! As a fine artist and graphic designer, he has done work for brands and companies like Vans, Los Angeles Rams, Adidas, Spiderman, Star Wars, Shake Shack and so many more! DJ has painted large scale murals across the United States! Be on the lookout – you can probably spot one of his amazing murals around town…. Dune Coffee shop, the Santa Barbara Presidio, or in the Funk Zone!
Meiya Sidney
Meiya co-designed and painted the “Sunset Stories” mural. Meiya is a Taiwanese-American artist. She is the daughter of our beloved art teacher – Ms. Chen! Ms. Chen has been her art teacher, and inspiration since Meiya was a little girl. Meiya goes to school at UCSB studying art and Chinese language. She works with ceramics, books, arts and painting. She has exhibited in 13 art shows and been involved in community projects around Santa Barbara.
Mia Pelayo Franco
Mia co-designed and painted our “Sunset Stories” mural. Mia was born and raised in Santa Barbara. She loves to paint landscapes and nature, with an imaginative twist. She attended California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She is a studio technician at Clay studio, a terra sol garden center designer and a scenic painter at Santa Barbara City College.
