Two more trees coming down in the 500 block of East Anapamu. These photos were captured on Friday (April 19).
The city worker said something about nine trees total. I do not know if that includes the two that fell on their own.

Sad but vital. Those trees created such a neat canopy and I loved driving through there while growing up in SB but they are past their life expectancy and have become a danger and if they fall on people they will die, not worth it. Hopefully the city plants some NATIVE trees there that can be beautiful quickly.
A review of historical photos show that there were not many trees, native or not, in SB when the city was founded.
That five-block long stand of Italian Stone Pines was designated a City Landmark in 1999. with 79 trees–now they number in the 50s. The provisions for the landmark status specify replacement to keep a healthy stand of trees and the iconic canopy. Despite pleas from the public for more than a decade, the Parks and Rec department, which is charged with the care of these historic trees, has not come up with a maintenance and replacement plan, which is the very least they can be expected to do .During the drought, the Pearl Chase Society spent $15,000 on watering devices to care for those trees (at the Parks and Rec request) –the City removed and disposed of them a few months ago, They have to do more than just cut them down and shrug it all off.
They will likely replace them w/Coast Live Oaks that are NATIVE trees. ….. (yawn) … like they do everywhere else in town these days.
