Paul Flores, the man convicted of the murder of Kristin Smart, has allegedly been attacked for the second time while serving his sentence at Pleasant Valley State Prison. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), prison officials are investigating the incident as an attempted homicide.
CDCR confirmed that prison staff witnessed an inmate stabbing Flores in the recreation yard on Wednesday, around 3:30 p.m. The situation was swiftly brought under control by responding officers using verbal commands. Two inmate-manufactured weapons were discovered at the scene, as per CDCR’s statement.
Flores received initial treatment for his injuries outside the prison and was subsequently said to be in fair condition as of Thursday morning. No other individuals were harmed during the attack.
The identity of Flores’ alleged attacker has not been disclosed by CDCR. However, it has been stated that the inmate has been placed in restricted housing while an ongoing investigation takes place.
Attorney Harold Mesick, representing Flores during the restitution phase of his case, indicated that he has limited information about the attack at this time. Mesick intends to request that Flores be transferred to a different facility for his safety.
This incident took place over seven months after another inmate, Jason Richard Budrow, allegedly used a handmade weapon to slash Flores’s neck on August 23. Flores was hospitalized for a few days before returning to prison. Budrow is currently serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole and is facing additional charges related to the 2023 attack on Flores. Budrow has a history of violent felonies, including the sexual assault of a minor in 2004, the murder of his ex-girlfriend in 2010, and the killing of his cellmate, Roger Kibbe, also known as the I-5 Strangler, in 2021.
Paul Flores, now 47 years old, was moved to Pleasant Valley State Prison in August of the previous year to begin serving his 25 years-to-life sentence for the murder of Kristin Smart. Flores and Smart were both students at Cal Poly when Smart went missing in 1996. Although Flores had long been a person of interest in the case, he was not arrested and charged until 2021.
As investigations into the second attack on Paul Flores continue, concerns over his safety have prompted his attorney to push for a transfer to a different correctional facility.

I find it strange how willing and often law and order types are to condone extra-judicial violence and murder.
They abandoned that stance when they decided to follow a lawless grifter.
