A large section of an oceanfront patio in Isla Vista collapsed during the rainstorm this past weekend.
An edhat reader captured a photo and reports the the deck and a section of the cliff at 6641 Del Playa Drive collapsed on Saturday, March 30.
About half of the tile deck fell into the ocean with the rest of the patio tile cracked at different heights leading back to the house, the edhat reader reported.
“I feel like it could go at anytime. It’s not safe, especially with Deltopia coming up,” the reader stated.
The unsanctioned festival weekend known as Deltopia is “scheduled” to take place this coming weekend as students return from Spring Break.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued important safety tips for those planning on visiting Isla Vista this weekend and mentioned bluff safety.
“The bluffs along Isla Vista’s coastline are dangerous to stand on. Falls from the bluffs occur nearly every year, sometimes with fatal consequences. Please remain on the proper side of all fencing or railing near the bluff’s edge to prevent injury,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
This past February an apartment building in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive eroded prompting at least 45 people to evacuate. The cliff erosion took a big section of an apartment’s oceanfront patio causing structural concerns.
It’s unclear if the building at 6641 Del Playa Drive has been evacuated or assessed by building inspectors.
The UCSB class of 2050 will have no memory of homes being on the south side of Del Playa and will think it was always just a long park.
But let me guess, the house is still considered safe and liveable? It’s time to start condemning those houses, they are NOT safe.
There was a Reddit thread recently from someone saying they were being evicted on short notice because their apartment building was red tagged and they needed emergency storage space for their stuff. Probably not coincidental.
Good! I know it has to suck for all involved but gathering $10k+ a month in rent and endangering the lives of people is just not worth the risk.
Agreed, but it would suck to be booted out having already put down a deposit, and then have to find a new place to stay when the term has already started and most places are full.
There’s an aerial pic of this in Ed’s post of my 3/29 “Springs Falls…” pix. Interestingly, though so many of these decks and buildings look precarious above this pic I wrote: “Don’t some of these dwellings seem quite precarious?” https://www.edhat.com/news/springs-falls-serenity/
Look to left of 3 large white-roofed, a smaller one, and 2 long gray-roofed buildings with dark green ground cover dangling down the cliff. It’s the next small white 2 story with another small building behind it (7th from top-right).
In the full-res version of my pic you can see what looks like furniture and/or storage sheds on the part of the deck that’s now on the beach. Guess whatever fell has already been strewn along the beach or washed out to sea.
Much worse since 2013 in the CA Coastal Rec. Project compared with and my recent flight. So many concrete overhangs along the IV bluff. I hope nobody on a beck goes over, of someone on the beach gets hit from falling bluff or deck during Deltopia. https://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=201308103&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=current
Looks like a hot tub was there at one point, judging by gEarth. The tree handn’t been cut way back like it is now, but if you move to the left and turn back to the right close to sea level you can look under the tree. Compare that view w/the pic in my Edhat item last week and you can see how much the bluff and deck have receded.

Thanks John, it says near the bottom that it’s 10/25/2022 of that Google Earth shot. The CA Coastal Rec. one shows a fairly large BBQ (with a little scrolling [L/R & U/D] and knowing which house/property you’re looking for) :

Waiting for that one woman to chime in here who frequently posts on social media and Nextdoor about how unfair erosion is to Isla Vista/Del Playa landlords and berates anyone who disagrees with her.
You mean Sac?
You can place yourself in that category. The bickering between the two of you has become so tiresome. I can’t be the only other person annoyed by it.
I am too Surferlife. I can’t get a single comment in without “Doc” Troll starting up.
I agree, SBsurfer. I want to read what people think, but I have no interest in various personalities sniping at each other in these comment sections.
Noted, Ahchoo and Surfer. I really need to stop falling in the troll traps and cut it off quick so they don’t end up with lengthy back and forths of no substance. Just hard for me to let it go when the insults and lies start spilling out all over the deck. I’ll try to do better.
Me three, obviously. Cheers to all.
SBSurf- You’re not the only one… It’s not only that, it’s anyone who comments here gets trolled by the usual suspects. I guess that’s just how people are now.
Ok, but let’s not confuse “trolling” with disagreeing with a point of view. I’ve seen some outrageously offensive or flat out misinformed posts and when I or someone else tries to correct, point out flaws, and yes, even argue against, we get labeled as trolls. Not the same thing. Not by a long shot.
Sac- “Ok, but let’s not confuse “trolling” with disagreeing with a point of view”
Disagreeing with derogatory comments, lies/unproven CNN or FOX BS is trolling. Own it.
OG – no, not at all. Its simply “Disagreeing with derogatory comments, lies/unproven CNN or FOX BS is trolling.”
When I troll Basic, I own it.
Calling people trolls when they disagree or correct offensive statements or blatant lies is just lazy logic. Resorting to insults instead of backing a claim or explaining your position is about as troll-ish and lazy as it gets.
Sac- Not just talking about you and Basic. It’s the whole vibe here. It’s like people have no idea how to have a conversation or debate. Do you talk to your friends or family like this when debating something? I’m guessing that if your mother-in-law disagrees with your political stance, you don’t call her names. Right? Why not do the same with your neighbors? Because you’re not right in front of them or they don’t know who you are. That’s what I’m talking about, but I think you already know.
Yup, that’s what I thought. Late.
Again with the “insults” about my gender. You’re a real class act.
Oh, you gotta own your stuff Sac – you’re 10:1 ratio on every other poster here. You have all the troll stuff mastered, without a degree!
But hey, it’s fun…
BASIC – why is me knowing a couple PAs in your department such a thing for you? You’ve mentioned it a few times now. It’s a small town. Hardly odd that I might know them. Or, are you belittling the situation? If it makes you feel better, I also know plenty of actual doctors, surgeons and specialists.
