One person has died in a traffic collision on Highway 1 in Lompoc on Wednesday.
At 8:47 a.m., emergency responders arrived in the area of Highway 1 and Santa Lucia Road for a two-vehicle crash.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a white 2017 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling eastbound from Santa Lucia Canyon Road, making a left turn onto northbound Highway 1. A red 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling southbound on Highway 1 just north of the intersection.
The two vehicles collided within the number one lane of southbound Highway 1.
The driver of the Chevy Cruz, 85-year-old Larry Vanderhoofven of Lompoc, was pronounced dead on the scene. His passenger, 84-year-old Patsy Vanderhoofven, sustained major injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center by a ground ambulance.
The two occupants of the Pontiac sustained minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital by a ground ambulance.
Highway 1 was down to one lane with traffic build up in the area. CHP, Sheriff’s officers, and Santa Barbara County firefighters were on the scene.
CHP states alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. The cause of this collision is under investigation.
[knock, knock] Administrator? Clean up on aisle 1 requested
What is it about reports of auto accidents that always bring out the most presumptive comments?
R.I.P. Sadly, the “cause is under investigation” is never disclosed to the public by a CHP Official, ever… Distracted driving is a serious problem on our local roads, yet it is never divulged by the investigating authorities, they would rather say, “speed kills” to substantiate speeding tickets.
COASTWATCH – please stop interjecting your assumptions every time there’s an accident. No class at all. I feel awful for the friends and family who have to read your comment.
I guess you gave up on all of your assumptions that it’s all the fault Caltrans and their engineering dept. and lack of signage and of course the CHP for not enforcing the speed limits…
Woah, what the heck, Tagdes? You seriously trolling me? Dude, get it together.
This is so sad. I hope the passenger pulls though. My condolences to the family and apologies for the comments here.
