An at-risk Lompoc man with dementia went missing on Tuesday evening.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office sent out notices to the public in Lompoc and Vandenberg Village to ask if they’d seen him.
The 77-year-old Lompoc man frequents hiking trails and was last seen in the 200 block of Galaxy Way.
After receiving the alert sent by Sheriff’s Dispatch, father-son team Adam and Aidan McClure decided to take their dog Ember for a walk to see if they could find the missing person along the paths behind Cabrillo High School.
“Sure enough they did!” wrote County Sheriff Public Information Officer Raquel Zick. “Also, shout out to [Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue] and [County Firefighters] for getting the missing person back off the trail and to the ambulance where he is receiving medical attention.”

Kudos to the S&R Team as well as the SB County Sheriff’s Deputies, Fish and Game and the Local Lompoc Community at large to help find Kevin… So impressed with the Command Post the S&R had set up with Google Maps and topography profile. All the neighbors on bikes and walking dogs paid off and for sure saved his life as hypothermia would have been gnarly Tuesday night… Great Job!!!
Bravo!
Nice work from the crew. This is a legit rescue and what they should be doing, as opposed to “rescuing” young folks who think they sprained their ankle, hit the iPhone, and can’t deal with a 3/10 pain.
Wow. You’d better hope, when they start restricted rescues, that people with poor socialization aren’t excluded.
So, no more resucing “young folk” unless it’s confirmed their pain level is over 3/10 (can’t trust those self reports, right?) and they’ve been diagnosed with at least a sprain or worse, yeah?
Sound.
Thank You All, First Responders, may you stay resilient heroes.
