Does anyone know what this is?
I saw it at Hendry’s beach on Monday during low tide.
Tar ball or lava rock?

Ohhhhh that is really cool! I have a rock identifier app on my phone and took a photo of your photo and it comes out as “Gneiss.” A metamorphic rock. Some of the examples it shows look identical with the goldish swirls.
Actually metamorphic, not igneous. Like granite.
I believe that is rock that you can find on the beach at Hendry’s, walking west. I’ve taken a lot of photos of it myself, it is so beautiful. But it’s definitely not gneiss, which is a very hard igneous rock. I believe it’s a kind of shale, part of the Monterey formation, which is a big geological feature in our area. Those phone apps, whether for rocks, birds, or plants make lots of mistakes!
MTNDRIVER – thanks for the info! I actually think I’ve seen this rock before too.
What is the ap? That sounds like something I should have.
TIREDMOM – it’s called “Rock Identifier” and it’s really cool! Give it a try!
Out in Death Valley there are entire canyons where water has worn the rock smooth and you can see these patterns. it begins to look like marble, but Gneiss is more like limestone to walk on … its textured a bit like sandpaper. There is also a lot of it in Europe , and it makes great climbing.
