An online fundraiser has been created to help support the son of a Goleta woman who was killed after being hit by a car last month.
Marjorie Vasquez, 86, was walking home with her son Richard in the 7300-block of Hollister Avenue during early evening hours of December 12, 2023. Marjorie was struck by a vehicle and died.
Details of the collision have yet to be released but the Sheriff’s Office confirmed they did not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision. It’s under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Response Team.
Richard was born with Down Syndrome and relied on his mother’s care and support.
“Richard, an incredible young man, has always faced life’s challenges with a bright smile and unwavering optimism. He was born with Down syndrome, but his boundless spirit and love for life have made him a beacon of joy in our lives,” the family wrote.
The family stated they are not only grieving but also struggling to navigate the numerous challenges that have arisen as a result.

This is so sad. I’ve seen Richard and his mother around town, especially in Costco where we would say hi to each other. My condolences to the family.

There is a memorial service planned for Marjorie Vasquez. 7 pm on Tuesday Jan. 23 at Jubilee Christian Church located at 7190 Hollister Ave. The community is invited to attend.
Not sure if this was the most resent post, as I just wanted to update that Richard Vasquez has moved to “Hillside House” and seems to be doing fine (as best possible). Reading it here:
