Daring and adventurous Santa Barbarans kicked off the new year by supporting a great cause for a local nonprofit.
Adam’s Angels, a group of volunteers that supports those experiencing homelessness on the South Coast, became this year’s charity partner with the Polar Dip for a New Year’s Day plunge.
On January 1st, locals and visitors alike gathered on East Beach, across from the Chromatic Gate, to support Adam’s Angels in their mission while embracing the invigorating spirit of the new year.
The Polar Plunge encourages participants to take a literal leap of faith by diving into the chilly waters of the Pacific Ocean without wetsuits, and sometimes fun costumes.
The event not only symbolizes a fresh start but also serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength demonstrated by those supported by this local nonprofit. By plunging into the cold waves, participants show their solidarity, raising funds and awareness for this cause.
The annual Polar Dip is organized by Hugh Margerum and encourages people from all walks of life to gather and celebrate the new year.

Super fun way to start the new year. Thanks to Hugh Magerum and friends for organizing this refreshing challenge as well as a way to help our homeless.. Wonderful photos Harry Rabin. Sorry I missed it…
I walked by there on New Year’s Day, and everyone seemed to be having fun, and it was for a good cause. However, when I want to freeze my butt off, I prefer to drink frozen margaritas, and I can get chips, salsa, and guacamole at the same time.
