I was in the Funk Zone this past weekend and I saw graffiti on the side of a vacant building.
“Remember whos land you are on. This is Chumash territory” is what it read.
It’s in the 100 block of E. Yanonali Street, the shared wall between the former Santa Barbara Winery tasting room and Lafond Winery Tasting Room, both vacant.
I wonder how long this has been there given both buildings are vacant.
Bets are it’s someone rage baiting and not even an indigenous person
What tribe did the Chumash “Indians” take the land from? There were others here before them.
Really? Interesting, who was here before the Chumash people?
Actually that is correct. The people that lived here almost 13k years ago were a different group. And so it goes…
Um…so who was here before the chumash?
Really? Interesting, same question. Who was here before the Chumash?
Sorry. There is no record of any group here before the chumash. The chumash and only one other tribe up north are credited with being the first groups to inhabit California based on linguistic studies going back from 13,000 to 16,500 years. Thought by researchers to be apart of the holkan language it was realized that it goes back far further than the rest of Indians of the state.
Your not going to find this on google, but you might by reading research papers on the subject.
