Could the City establish a speed limit for the bike lanes? Paint a 10 mph or 15 mph marking once each block? I am finding that some bicyclists, especially the e-bikes, are riding at obviously unsafe speeds. When mixing in pedestrians that cross the bike lane randomly, a marked speed limit may help establish a safer mixed use environment.
They can look both ways just like they would crossing the street. No difference.
you look both ways and when it’s safe, you cross. Or is that too much to ask?
The point is that State Street is now a pedestrian mall with a bike path down the middle. The pedestrians feel like they can cross back and forth at will, unlike a street with vehicle traffic. IMHO, this is not a bad thing. My suggestion is that the bike path have a speed limit so all users can safely coexist.
I was down there a few days ago and it looks a little bit like a race track with cyclists zooming through. Although… most people were on the sidewalks so maybe it’s working?
Horrible idea! Promenade should be pedestrian only.
State Street is supposed to be a main shopping and eating street. How is this continual bending backwards to accommodate speeding bikes helping commerce on State? The high rent leases and vagrants are killing sales. No vehicles means far less shoppers. Santa Barbara needs a new city council who is sober and sane and not anti vehicle. State street will NEVER come back because of closed streets.. They are slowly killing State Street and are too stubborn and ideological too do what is best for the community. Every Street they have tried this large bike lane nonsense in San Francisco, the businesses that were there successfully for years, are closing down. Keep Mayor Rouse and get rid of the rest….quickly!!!!
What is Mayor Rouse doing about the “high rent leases and vagrants?”
