On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at approximately 6:04 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded with fire and medics to the 7300-block of Hollister, near the intersection of Lowell Way for report of person down in the median of the roadway.
When first responders arrived, they found an adult female pedestrian in the median who was deceased as the result of a traffic collision.
Deputies contacted the driver of the vehicle at the scene, and they do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
The collision is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Response Team (SMART).
The release of the decedent’s identity is pending notification of next of kin.
OMG – this is such a tragedy. We know her! All the neighbors know her – this woman would walk from the grocery store to the mobile home park that just renovated there near CalTaco. She walks with her middle-aged son who is DS and quite adorable. On NextDoor, those who know them, said he witnessed his Mom get struck and killed and ran to the businesses there by CalTaco and Monarch Hair Salon. Also reported there is no known next of kin in California. This young man needs to stay in his home with a Caregiver – he must already be “in the system” as a person with disability. Now I think he needs a GOFUNDME to help him along this change in his everything. If anyone knows him or her or who is helping, please post, I want to contribute in any way possible.
A memorial service has been planned for Marjorie Vasquez. 7 pm, Tuesday Jan. 23 at Jubilee Christian Church located at 7190 Hollister Ave. The community is invited.

I found their name and address with an online search, and reported it to Adult Protective Services. I hope we hear more about how he will be faring. <3
This is so sad, as there’s no crosswalk near this intersection that is also right across the street from CalTaco/Cheers Liquor
per Tom Bolton @Noozhawk his article states that: Deputies contacted the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman, Zick said” which is actually slightly different than what’s posted here?
Still very sad….

The conversation with the City of Goleta about installing a crosswalk in this area is beginning. Please keep a lookout for opportunities to let them know how important this is to you. Thank you.
Wayside – Thank you for that info. I was able to locate the gofundme here:

A message to all who knew this woman: please reach down deep and contribute whatever you can to the Go Fund Me page. Only three people have contributed so far, and that’s just so sad.
.We drove by this last night – 5 or 6 Sherriff vehicles with lights on crowded at the median. That is very sad and I’ve been afraid of having something like that happen there for awhile. This area absolutely needs a crosswalk and light Canon Green. The traffic on this part of Hollister is busy most times of the day. People jay walk frequently. At night, it is very dark here – and people jay walk at night. Cars speed along this part too in order to get to the next light. Sometimes impossible to make a left hand turn onto Hollister from Canon Green because of the traffic – and then cars back up onto Canon Green and take risks finding an entry spot to turn. The turn/U-turn areas along the median are not well defined or illuminated. Goleta’s traffic planning seems to be very lacking – and don’t get me started on the traffic stop timing on Storke and Hollister, Storke and 101 and others in the area – completely sub-par.
