Santa Barbara County firefighters rescued a baby camel in distress on Friday.

At 9:50 a.m., a crew from Fire Station 23 in Sisquoc responded to the 3700 block Tepesque Canyon in Santa Maria for an animal assist call.

Crews discovered an 8-month-old camel named “Frankie” was in distress while being stuck on the hillside.

With the assistance of Frankie’s mother, firefighters were able to guide the baby camel off the hillside, reuniting with its family at the bottom.

“Firefighters are trained to think about the what ifs, however a camel assist is not something we immediately think of. Nice job ME23!” said Captain Scott Safechuck.

It’s unclear if the camels are residents of the area or just visiting.
