Horses were plentiful at the “Flying A” since many of the studio’s films were Westerns. Inevitably, some of the horses bonded with an actor. And vice versa.
“Harold Lockwood . . . has a favorite horse, ‘Chestnuts,’ and when he went East with his company, he was very loath to leave ‘Chestnuts’ behind . . . ‘Chestnuts’ was left with a friend, who promised that the horse should not be used in pictures until Harold returned. So, ‘Chestnuts’ had the best of times, and got lots of hay and exercise, and his master found him fit and well on his return.” – Picture-Play Weekly, August 14, 1915
