By the Santa Barbara Police Department
On July 28, 2023, at 11:53 am, the Santa Barbara Police Combined Communications Center received several reports of an adult male had climbed to the mantel portion of the archway facing the 1100 block of Anacapa Street at the Santa Barbara County Court House.
First responders from multiple agencies arrived on the scene and verbally contacted the male, who appeared to be in mental health distress. SBPD’s Crisis Negotiations Response Team was able to talk to the man, calm him, and convince him to come down safely. The Fire Department utilized a ladder truck to assist.
A mental health evaluation was completed once the male was safely on the ground. At this time, no criminal charges are being considered.
Traffic on Anacapa Street was diverted for approximately 45 minutes during the incident.

Good outcome. Thank you.
Really, you’re seriously worried about taxes and taxpayers? Your taxes already pay for the pictured, dedicated public servants, because, they’re um, already AT work.
What a truly tone deaf query/response, to what looks like someone in crisis, surrounded and being assisted by caring professionals, doing their JOBS.
My response has nothing to do with “taxes”.
They’ll probably shut off access to everyone.
Glad he is safe and was treated with the empathy he needs. I appreciate that they kept his name out of the paper, gave him a mental health evaluation and let him move on. Who ever talked him down did a
amazing job. To have a well trained response team with mental health experience is an important resource for any healthy community.
I’d love a $ tally of how much that response cost the taxpayers.
Lucky777: Whatever the total amount was for this rescue it is worth it. What will cost a lot more is the barrier that will be designed and constructed. The barrier would prevent or make it a lot more difficult to access that portion of the building via the fountain. Just imagine what that barrier is going to look like…hopefully better than a parklet.
Is that what really matters here? Or all that matters? Wow…
If this keeps up the county will have to build a barrier.
