Santa Barbara County and Santa Maria City Firefighters responded to a fire in a trash truck near Highway 101 in Santa Maria on Wednesday.

At 3:46 p.m., crews arrived on Frontage Road adjacent to the northbound lanes near the Clark Ave exit and discovered a large Waste Management truck had dumped the contents of its load onto the roadway.

Firefighters extinguished the contents on arrival and remained on the scene for mop-up and overhaul.

Crews on the scene also noted a large amount of ammunition had been improperly disposed and was in the discarded trash, according to Santa Barbara County Captain Scott Safechuck.

“For proper disposal of unwanted ammunition contact your local law enforcement agency non-emergency line for assistance,” said Safechuck.

The official cause of the fire is under investigation.
