Update by the edhat staff
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Ojai area on Sunday afternoon causing a series of aftershocks.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports the quake’s epicenter was 4.3 miles southeast of Ojai, located off Sulphur Mountain Road.
The earthquake struck at 2:41 p.m. with a depth of 9 miles.
USGS reports a series of aftershocks from 2:43 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. with magnitudes ranging from 3.1 to 3.6
Edhat readers located on the South Coast were quick to report feeling the quake and its aftershocks. USGS states residents as far as San Luis Obispo, Lancaster, and San Diego felt the earthquake.
Southern California is currently experiencing the tropical storm effects of Hurricane Hilary with most areas welcoming rain while others are bracing for intense winds and heavier storms.

Did anyone else just feel an earthquake?
Shook for about 2 full minutes.
Rocked hard near the Miramar. Ojai probably got blasted
5 isn’t that bad. Richter scale isn’t linear, 6.0 is ten times the magnitude of a 5.0!
Correct, but the Energy Release differential is 32 times greater.
I did not feel it here near the SB mission. I got the alert then I had to figure out where it was. 5.0 near the vicinity of Santa Paula
There are many oil wells in that area, any chance it might have to do with fracking???
I heard it was from multiple expansions of solar panels in Ventura County causing mountain vibrations reverberating throughout the Southland.
Trumps thousands of miles of new border wall built with Chinese steel created a magnetic convection current.
Yea
Yes, felt it on the mesa.
Thanks Ed for quick post! Interesting gentle rolling motion maybe 15-20 seconds here at 101/154. Interesting to see if/how others felt it. USGS: M 3.3 – 6 km SE of Ojai, CA – 2:47:33pm – 34.418°N 119.195°W – Depth 9.2 km. Interestingly, 4 more since as of 2:54pm, and a 2.5 one yesterday. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=15.87681,-137.54883&extent=55.57834,-52.38281
Oops, 5.1 – 7 km SE of Ojai – 2:41pm (mistakenly posted an aftershock I’d been looking at).
We felt it in Noleta, just some mild shaking. CNN is reporting the magnitude of 5 + two aftershocks.
Less than two hours ago I told my houseguests that this is classic earthquake weather!!! My earthquake radar is still working quite well it seems. My prayers that everyone is safe and hopefully no damage. Wow!
“Classic earthquake weather.” YES. I had forgotten the lore of my childhood but we were raised on the idea that hot/sultry days were earthquake friendly.
5.0 near Ojai – our house shook but 2 minutes? i think not. It was about 30 seconds. There are some after shocks going on down there too.
Andrea – glad you are telling others how they should have experienced the earthquake.
Yes, felt it here by Ortega Park.
Barely felt it and we live on Lower Riviera. A VERY slight movement from east to west, 3-4 times. I was seated on floor and housemate upstairs also felt it.
Yup…rockin’ and rollin’ on the east end of the Riviera.
Felt it very strong in Carpinteria, 3+ aftershocks over 3.0 felt so far.
Pleasantly surprised with the notification.
The technology is advancing fast, I read an article a few months back that said they’ll soon be able to warn 1-2 minutes in advance! Can’t wait, I live in a 100-year old house that I’d rather not be inside when The Big One hits
Yes, felt the roll for a while, saw out door shrubs move a little… looks like Tonga, Hawaii and Ojai not sure what order but definitely the pacific plate…
Not sure if the energy waves from the Hurricane added any influence, but probably not or maybe? see science paper to previous

felt reclining chair jiggling….saw water in glass moving….classic earthquake aftershocks….
Felt that Eastside. Immediately shut down the PC’s w/Harddrives, then went the M.2 drive PC to look it up one USGS. It says there’s multiple 3’s as well. Went to call sister back east (Mi.), the phone said “Hold on, tack cover…”. They forgot to warn us PRIOR to the event?

Rather strong shake here on the ground floor in Goleta near Girsh Park. I thought it might be a small close one. Surprised to see it is a 5.1 near Ojai.
APS, Alamar, Upper Garden, lower Riviera really need to cut down their Botox doses because we didn’t feel anything.
I didn’t feel anything by State and Alamar. Maybe it’s a warning of what’s to come….
I got the alert seconds before I started to feel it! Very long earthquake…no violent shaking, just continuous rolling for well over a minute. I’m in the center of Isla Vista.
Had a good little shake by Parma park
Carpinteria shook 10 seconds or so, got my attention. The alert on my phone went off about 2 seconds before the shaking.
Same here blazer… shakealertLA app nailed it, the app alarm went off right as the earthquake hit.
Didn’t feel it on APS but did get the alert on my cell just now.
Showed up on the MyShake app on my phone as a 5.1
Close to a fault that runs through SB along Foothill, on the USGS map. Maybe that fault area is where people felt it the most.
I am about a mile above Ontare and Foothill. A good shake but only felt the first. Received cell emergency notice seconds after.
Grove lane here, damn right I felt it.
Worst damage report I’ve seen was a $900 glass bottle of tequila in an Ojai bar.
Hopefully that is as bad as it gets here. I know it has been a lot worse but…
15 quakes in the cluster as of 4:05. Glad the “Big One” was only 5.1 though that must’ve been a rather more intense ride in Ojai.
According to nbclosangeles.com /news/earthquakes: “There were no immediate reports of significant damage. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department conducted an aerial survey of Lake Casitas Dam, Matilija Dam and the city of Ojai and found no damage.”
Got the alert…slow roll, in Noleta.
Glad, edhat, was quick to have updates.
Also, happy Kcal 9 news, was on for the storm, and has had great coverage, of the quake.
Where are our news crews?
Ojai, is so close…not one local station can show up.
KEYT news is very pathetic at reporting the hurricane, earthquake and just about anything significant in a small town. Cannot count on them for any timely report. Edhat is far better.
Felt nothing on the Eastside near Franklin School, but got an earthquake warning on my iPhone that was in my pocket! …Looked at my earthquake app; it showed nothing; have now downloaded another app and it shows the 5.08, 4.3 mi. southeast of Ojai and many small aftershocks in the range of 1-3.
This earthquake reminds me of the 9 February 1971 Sylmar quake. It was magnitude 6.6 and happened at 6:02 AM.
We were in bed in Goleta, and were awakened by the bed gently shaking east-west, north-south, then east west.
I said “that’s a big earthquake somewhere.” We then both said our daughter’s name, as she was attending UCLA.
She reported that being in the shower on the 6th floor of Dykstra Hall was no place to be during an earthquake. There is nothing to hold on to.
I was at Albertson’s in Carpinteria. I wouldn’t have hardly known it was happening, except for seeing the spice rack display swaying a little, and everyone’s phones going off in the store. Yawn…
