Teach your kids as best you can. After that they’re on their own.
BASIC – I agree. But, no matter how we much we try and teach our kids and do the best for them, IMO when it’s our/their time to go there is absolutely nothing we could have done to prevent this, period. It doesn’t matter how safe we are acting or what we are doing. When our number comes up, it’s over, we’re done here. Maybe if he’d stepped an inch or two away from the edge he might not have fallen. A person might have been walking ahead of him and didn’t meet the same fate. Why? Sad? Definitely. His age and school being in session are just a coincidence. It was his time and pray he’s in a better place.
I rarely agree with Basicinfo805, but four downvotes? Do we not trust our adult children to make their own decisions?
First one of the year, sadly there will probably be 2 more during this year of higher learning at UCSB. Every year, the cliffside takes 2-5 people…RIP.
Sadly. yes, and the academic year has just begun.. All I can think of is suicide-prevention nets below the cliffs, like at the Golden Gate bridge, but I doubt that will happen. Not implying this was a suicide – most of these incidents have identified drugs or alcohol as involved. In this case, we just don’t know.
This event happened in Isla Vista – not at UCSB.
SBCC kid too.
JB86 – that’s not a bad idea. I’ve always wondered why nothing really has ever been done about this. It’s so tragic and it happens so often. Young adults (even teens) being taken away at the prime of their lives. I can’t think of anything more horrible as a parent. Deepest condolences to the family and friends.
COAST – this has nothing to do with UCSB but don’t let that stop you from taking an off topic dig at the top rated university.
Not again!
I took basicinfo805’s comment differently than most. I know that parents often go through gut wrenching guilt after these types of accidents. “what did I do wrong, how could I have done things better” etc etc and hard as it is to hear, you do your best, know things can still go wrong, and you let them go out into the world.
My grandmother lived well into her 90’s and she was devastated when my aunt, her youngest daughter died from complications caused by smoking in her 60’s. My grandmother had tried everything to get my aunt to not start smoking but had to let it go
