A 27-unit apartment complex is proposed above and around the current Cantwell’s Market building on State Street in Santa Barbara.
The Santa Barbara City Planning Commission will perform a concept review of the project on Wednesday afternoon.
The proposal for 1529-1533 State Street includes a four-story mixed-use project combining commerical and multi-family residential apartments. The 27 units will have an average of 811 square feet and comprise of a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units on the second, third, and fourth floors.
The 18,000 square-foot site is currently developed with two commercial buildings, Cantwell’s Market and a dance studio, along with a commercial parking lot.
The proposed project involves demolition of the existing structures, although Cantwell’s Market is expected to close during the construction then reopen in the new space that fronts the corner of State and Arrellaga Streets.
The ground floor will include 12 parking spots for the commercial building. A basement parking lot with 22 residential parking spaces and 27 residential bicycle spaces are accessible through a ground floor garage entrance on Arrellaga Street.
Commissioners conducted a site visit on Tuesday morning nd will review this design on Wednesday (September 13) at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall.
Interesting 27 units w/ 22 parking spaces and 27 for bikes. Wonder which of the new tenants won’t get a parking space. Bet it won’t be those up top. ;<)
Or, back in the day when I rented an apt in a big city, you had to pay extra for a parking spot in the garage.
The one bedroom units I bet.
I find it interesting that this note was added to the project sheet:
“THIS PROJECT IS 100% PRIVATELY FUNDED, IS NOT A PUBLIC HOUSING FACILITY, IS NOT OWNED AND/OR OPERATED BY, FOR OR ON BEHALF OF A PUBLIC ENTITY & NO TAX CREDIT
RECEIVED FROM STATE OR FEDERAL. THIS IS NOT A TCAC FACILITY, AND NOT A SOCIAL SERVICE CENTER. THUS THIS PROJECT SHALL COMPLY WITH 11A.”

And Santa Barbara continues to increase its density.
Remember Teasers Restaurant? Hard to imagine it as condos.
The City doesn’t want enough parking for every unit. The City Counsel has two easterly stated they want less parking, less cars & actually admonish oriole fir not riding bikes. Meanwhile they all drive cars themselves, some full size pick up trucks.
The real estate market will show us if buyers don’t want parking. And those that don’t have parking will park in the city streets & parking kits around the area.
SBLETS – Can you clarify the second sentence? Oriole Fir?
Just more righty-tighty dog whistle slang, as you might expect.
5651: I think that note is to set expectations that these apartments will be market rate, not “affordable”
Sad to see that hotel and apartment rental businesses are taking over any opportunities for ‘home ownership’ for workers, but I guess with UCSB inviting over 25,000 paying rental customers ( otherwise known as ‘students’) and City College inviting anther 10,000 rental customers( otherwise known as students) there’s big money to be made in the transient economy! Workers just need to get up earlier and drive a little further… and stop dreaming of owning a home in Santa Barbara.
