Former mayor Helene Schneider gave the Clark Estate to her boyfriend to manage and the general public has been locked out for NINE long years. Ms. Clark left this for the people of Santa Barbara to enjoy and it has been used by the rich, famous and their political pals for the entire NINE years. So much for the wishes of Ms. Clark that it benefit the people of Santa Barbara. Dick Wolf and the board of directors have turned the estate into “donate big bucks and you can visit and use it”. It has become a venile venue!
I think you mean venal, rather than venile.
Just drive up it’s all good…
I seriously doubt Bellosguardo will be anything more than a gaudy event venue for the well connected. It was supposed to be given to the public, instead Helene Schneider gave it to cronies and oligarchs. Disgusting.
“It was supposed to be given to the public”
Wrong. Huguette Clark gave it to a private foundation. Helene Schneider didn’t give anything to anyone, she appointed a director as she was required to.
How much did it cost you to visit?
My fence hopping days ended LOONG AGO!
Interested people should visit—- Bellosguardo. org —-for details & tickets.
For maximum information, read the book EMPTY MANSIONS beforehand so you’ll learn everything about it & the family that built and vacationed there.
I went to that site and looked at the vistation tab. They advise me that tickets are unavailable unless you are a donor/supporter. A little tough on those of us with a limited income.
We did not have to join, become a donor, or anything like that. Similar fixed income.
It did take a while for the opportunity to buy tickets though.
Again, I suggest (free at the library) reading the book Empty Mansions, and you’ll read the amazing story of the Clark family!
Did you hop the fence? A few more details would be appreciated Joe.
Did the tour include inside the mansion, Joe? If yes, were you allowed to take photos? Can you share? Most of us will probably not get an opportunity to visit the Clark Estate, but are still interested in a peak at the grounds and interiors.
I have pics that I took back in the 80’s and Huguette was a homely lady.
That said we had to walk in our socks to do our jobs.
People will destroy a good thing if you let them.
