A baby red-tailed hawk fell 90-feet from a tree then the community rallied together to save and re-nest the fledgling.
Last month the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN) was alerted by concerned community members about the bird near the El Encanto Hotel.
Neighor Jim Marshall first discovered the bird ihad fallen from a 90-foot tall eucalyptus tree n the early evening. He was assisted by another neighbor, Peggy Love, who took care of the bird overnight before delivering it to SBWCN’s hospital the next morning.

The wildlife care staff conducted a thorough exam and found that miraculously the baby hawk had no injuries.
SBWCN’s Director of Operations Julia Parker then began calling tree trimming companies to help re-nest the hawk with its mother and siblings. The tree-trimming first company, Douglas Cicileo Trees and Arborist Services, arrived on the scene but relaized they didn’t have a tall enough lift to reach the nest, it only went up 70 feet.
There was only one company in town that owned a 90-foot lift, Peterson’s Tree Care. They were able to arrive the following morning with arborist Gobino Nova safely reaching the hawk’s nest and returning the baby red-tailed hawk to its family.

Two El Encanto Hotel employees, James Esparza and Alex Billalba, also helped with the hawk reunion.
“It took a lot of different people. It was totally a community effort,” said SBWCN Communications Manager Rachel Mattovich. “The baby red tail hawk and its family are doing well and this was such a special community collaboration and wildlife rescue story!”
