An elderly man using a cane was attacked in front of Shalhoob’s Funk Zone Patio. A large group of people witnessed the attacked.
The perpetrator fled on foot. The Santa Barbara Police are on the scene investigating now.

I hope that people helped him and didn’t just watch and call 911 while someone attacked him. People need to be more involved with each other, protect each other and be a community that cares.
In an ideal community, people would help and care. In reality, if you help someone being attacked you’re the next one up for serious and possibly permanent injury. If you’ve been to the ER in the last few years you also know how absurdly expensive helping people can be.
Helping people is ALWAYS the right thing to do! Especially if there are multiple witnesses who can step in en masse.
Chillin- Or YOU get prosecuted for injuring or accidentally killing the attacker.
This is what happens, and will happen more and more in a SICK society who lets anything happen without retribution!
The CRIMINALS get excuse after excuse , shoplifting is being institutionalized and glorified and if you try to deter or keep the criminal to perpetrate his (sorry: “their”) crime YOU will be prosecuted while the criminal is unprosecuted and left free so that they can keep commit their crimes, undeterred, more and more often!
@4:33
Another word salad. Don’t worry, the orange moron will be paying for his crimes relatively soon, and you can rest easy in our rules-based society.
FOND – wowzers! Once again, thank goodness NOTHING that you said is actually true. No wonder people like you think they need guns. Heck, just walking outside must terrifying!
You misinterpret what’s happening. Edhat removes crazy falsehoods and hateful utterances.
Sacjon:
Keep your head in the sand!
Everything I say is true and happening more and more often even when Edhat CENSORS me for saying it because, according to them, all you can say is that everything is fine and well in California’s paradise!
FOND, you sound unhinged.
FOND
1) Your comment is still there, not “censored.” LIE #1. 2) Again, none of that is happening. No one is letting criminals carry out criminal acts without taking action.
Just take a minute and imagine if your statement was actually, even partially true. Cops would be walking by crimes doing nothing. People would be beating each other up outside of bars and nothing would stop them. Shoplifters would be ravaging stores and no one would call the police or report it. DUDE…. read a local news site once in a while. ALL of this is being reported and cops are arresting people DAILY for crimes.
Life is not meant to be lived in so much fear and panic. Sorry, man. I really am sorry.
I know of two people who were killed when they stepped in as good samaritans to break up fights. Two different occasions, deadly consequences. CHILLINGRILLIN makes a valid point, people who stand back and cell phone capture an assault are not doing nothing, it may be a way to convict the perp.
Even yelling and screaming at them to stop is better than standing back and filming. Our society is so screwed up if people think recording an incident is better than trying to help a fellow human who is being assaulted.
Agreed–yelling and screaming might at least give an attacker a moment of doubt and give a victim an opportunity to escape or fight back. I was on State and saw a homeless guy raise big stick over his head and start to go after two teenage girls, I immediately yelled in my most commanding voice and he hesitated and they bolted. Don’t know if he would have actually done it, but I know I got his attention because he stopped and looked at me. Use common sense, I’m not jumping in to a pack of gangbangers trying to knife someone, no way. If I see that in my car I will definitely run a mofo over to save a life, but not hand to hand.
Agree, SBSAND.
if i ever saw something like that and saw people filming and not helping, i’d be helping the guy and then collecting cell phones. idiots…
Lucky, you must be divinely sponsored to be always able to give personal anecdotes on these things. Really, TWO people you know were KILLED for being good Samaratins? WOW, think I will avoid knowing you in real life.
So…
We have a description of the victim but not the perp?
California Dreamin, gotta love it.
It’s wood idea to carry pepper spray or something to protect yourself while walking. I walk my dog with a hike and strike stun stick since I walk alone early. I hope the elderly man is ok. What makes people so evil?
MEBK – I too walk alone and would like to know where I can get a stun stick. Thank you!
I am a 71 year old female and I think my immediate reaction would have been to help. Of course, I am another easy target.
From what I heard, the victim came to Shalhoob’s to serve a subpoena – a second attempt, as the first time he came to serve the subpoena earlier in the day, the owner had claimed to be someone else. The second time, the owner almost ran him over while fleeing, and a second person attacked him, stealing his hat, his phone, and his cane, as shocked bystanders were screaming.
LJ was the guy who was getting the subpoena, and later almost ran the elderly guy over.
Well that, if true, is an interesting plot twist.
If true, that this was LJ Shalhoob running from a subpoena, shame on him. He is a middle aged man and purportedly upstanding community member.
GeneralTree: Please report to LE if you in fact saw LJ nearly run the guy over and had one of his employees attack/beat/rob him. I get it that sometimes we want to protect our friends and family, but PLEASE, in this case, do the right thing!
Babycakes – -what in the world makes you think I somehow have information? That is ridiculous. Please read the comments before replying to them.
GeneralTree: Let’s not get distracted from trying to find these perps and bring them to justice. I have read each of your dozen or more comments on this thread. These comments either correct or challenge other comments, so a reasonable person such as myself would conclude that you possibly might have knowledge of what happened prior/during/after this horrific attack. My comment clearly stated that IF you know something, spill the beans to LE. I believe you most likely misinterpreted my “IF you know” as “SINCE you know” or “BECAUSE you know”…, which is not what I wrote. We good….no harm…no foul (except this foul weather!).
“LJ was the guy who was getting the subpoena, and later almost ran the elderly guy over.” Where’s the proof of this statement?
KARMA – nope. BABY and unfortunately you, have not read GT’s comments it seems. GT is apparently the only one questioning the truth behind this (possibly defamatory) theory put forth by the anonymous poster at JUN 03, 2023 08:37 AM. GT is quoting other peoples comments and questioning them, not making those comments as his/her own. Weird that you guys are now accusing him of being an employee. I’m not seeing ANYTHING in GT’s comments that would suggest he/she is making this up, but rather attacking the veracity of this “theory.”
By the way, it’s amazing Edhat leaves all these comments up, that identify a person, attribute some crime to them, which very likely may be false and definitely capable of damaging their reputation. Just a thought there.
BABYCAKES IS correct in her assessment that GT is an insider or knows something. I too feel the same.
I think the former, disgruntled employee GT keeps refering to is himself.
“Evil can only prevail ff the good do nothing”. This man may have been a veteran who served his country. I hope we get the dreadful human who did this. What a COWARD, attacking an old man with cane.
Thanks Randy Rowse!
Besides, the burden of proof is on you. Provide proof that Randy Rowse caused this elderly man to be attacked. A far more outlandish assertion. Next you can ask around- I’d bet that someone who could identify LJ saw him speeding away from the scene.
Like I’m going to identify myself which would enable one of LJ’s henchmen to come after me. No thanks.
Non sequitur much? The victim was trying to deliver a subpoena that the intended recipient didn’t want to receive. He was “somehow, mysteriously” attacked. This has nothing to do with Randy Rowse.
And do show us the proof where Shalhoob was receiving a subpoena. That could be true – but not going to believe that until I see some proof. Otherwise it’s likely a former employee making crap up.
Don’t be sad. You are anonymous and probably didn’t speak up when people blamed the previous mayor for everything under the sun. But you do you.
Who is LJ?
Sacjon – an anonymous poster made the claim that one of the Shalhoob family beat up the man while he was trying to serve a subpoena. Sounds like a disgruntled former worker – we shall see, I haven’t heard any news that anyone on the Shalhoob team was arrested.
“Besides, the burden of proof is on you.” Your wife is your secretary, not me
“Like I’m going to identify myself which would enable one of LJ’s henchmen to come after me. No thanks.” So you’re the disgruntled employee. That makes sense.
Or wait, maybe my bad…..? An anonymous poster said the owner attacked the man who was “trying to serve a subpoena.” GT has been saying “where’s the proof?” Also, “maybe it was a former employee” that posted that comment. OK, so what? Maybe it was. Either way, the REAL problem here is, was that comment about the attacker and victim true? If not, folks should be careful what theories they spread, especially when identifying the subject.
KARMA – “No one here is a former employee, there is no conspiracy.” – GT isn’t the one pushing that theory. The anonymous poster you quoted yesterday was.
Here is an excerpt about a career criminal with a very long resume of criminal activity
“[Smith] was arrested during an armed robbery attempt at an upper State Street motel. It was his second arrest in 48 hours, after he was apprehended trying to burglarize another nearby business.” Here is a story about a person who has been in and out of some sort of lock up most of his life. The guy was arrested 48 hours before for attempted burglary and was already back on the street doing an armed robbery. A simple look at the rap sheet shows that within weeks if not days of release from prison, he re-offends but for some reason the State of CA keeps letting criminals go on their own recognizance… which is a joke
Some bystanders did chase the perpetrator and a blurry photo was taken. But they lost him on Santa Barbara St. It is hard to imagine that the victim, seen in the photo, was a target for a random act of theft or violence. There were a number of people in the immediate area that were better target’s if this was simply about stealing a purse or something like that. It is very suspicious all around as I understand that the person the victim tried to serve a subpoena too was seen laughing at the victim after he was beaten with his cane!
@Bubba1985 POINT BLANK…YOU ARE SO WRONG TO VICTIM BLAME! SHAME ON YOU FOR BEING SO PATHETICALLY IGNORANT. THIS HUMAN BEING HAS EVERY RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHATEVER CAREER PATH THEY CHOOSE. EVER HEARD OF THE SAYING, ” DON’T KILL THE MESSENGER?”
ON ANOTHER NOTE. I hope the victim in this case makes a full and speedy recovery.
I also want to state that I have jumped in as a bystander to stop many fights. There is just no way I could stand there while someone was not only being assaulted but losing the fight. Especially an elderly person. Never once did I worry for my safety, that doesn’t factor in when you need to act quickly in order to save someone’s life. I have no plans on changing that about myself… it’s an innate trait that I am proud to possess. I would hope someone would do the same for me, a loved one, and Yes, even you, Bubba1985.
Same here. I may not physically put myself into the middle but there are a lot of ways you can help, and we should! Calling 911 isn’t enough, in the time it takes help to arrive the person could be seriously injured or dead.
Perhaps the man should think about a new route of employment, instead of a high-risk job serving subpoenas where obviously the recipient is going to be upset. I would think hobbling around on a cane while ruining other people’s day with court papers is not the best job for you my friend!
Can anyone post more details? If there is surveilance video? It should be shared. No?
Yup, if I got mugged and beaten, I would definitely enjoy reliving the moment on TikTok along with ten million random strangers around the world.
On Labor Day Friday afternoon, I witnessed a punk cold cock and elderly person who was sitting outside at Joe’s. The punk ran off and I recognized him. A bunch of us gave a description to the police and the punk was caught. Saw him back on State street on Tuesday.
Anyone who spends time downtown knows this punk. Short, with kind of a limp, wears shirts without sleeves, hangs out and drinks Vodka on the west side of state between Anapamu and Carrillo, walks down the middle of state with fists clenched pulling plants out of the planters and punching signs. I gave this description to the police and they immediately knew who he was.
i mean memorial day
Karma – You still work in the kitchen at Roy?
that is a local drunk (i work at state and carrillo and deal with him often) who calls himself “ninja” he’s a menace and violent. he drinks a gallon of vodka and passes out in the street, FD and PD come, scoop him up, and he’s back at it in two days. it’s ridiculous. get rid of this jerk. SBPD is aware of him, yet they can’t seem to do much. he fights people, chases them too. he hangs out with this other skinny white drunk guy named Sean. They need to bust this guy “Ninja” and remove him from SB streets. His real name is Rocky. I only know this from having to deal with him scaring our customers away
I see that a new Shalhoobs is going to open up in Goleta in the Ralph’s shopping center
on Hollister. In the old BBQ site.
Maybe the dangerous site in the Fun Zone is closing?
there is no danger in the funk zone, the only danger is the OWNER OF SHALHOOBS
Is this another “nothing to see here” from SBPD & Mayor Rowse?
They say that a lot about crime.
How’s that for a “word salad”
Guess some oriole are paid to ignore and promote false narratives like “nothing to see here”
Trolls
Just more schizophasia.
Do you ever read what you’ve written, and see whether it approximates English?
Or whether it expresses any rational thought?
Word salads like you regularly produce may indicate:
a) Incipient schizophrenia.
b) Thinking your smartphone can do speech recognition.
Edhat is great if you think there is only one perspective.
Go against that and you will be banned.
I thought topics were to be stuck to instead of trying to bring politics into it.
I know, I know Orange man bad.
I don’t like him and won’t vote for him but dang, some people really are triggered in their heads about fear I guess, that he might win again.
Cue the triggered and get the popcorn out.
Troll-My name is Chico and that is the opposite of what I am.
I’m gonna guess yours has the same relevance.
Chico:
That’s exactly right!
Try denouncing the horrors that happen more and more often and you get censored by those “free speech advocates”
Not seeing your comment in the penalty box. Who “banned” you? Who “censored” you. You are on a privately owned website providing low information drivel and it doesn’t seem to be getting deleted and you are still posting, so you are apparently not banned. Show us on this doll where other people’s opinions hurt your precious feeling. The “F your feelings” crowd suddenly whimpers when they hear something they don’t like.
FOND and CHICO – I don’t see any comments that were removed other than BASIC’s (surprise surprise). Where were you or anyone “censored” or “banned” or anything other than disagreed with for saying something most don’t agree with?
Also….. “triggered” is screaming and crying about being “banned” and “censored” while your comment remains posted with no penalty whatsoever. Seems kinda snowflake-y and trigger-y to me…..
FOND – oh…. I see what’s going on. You think when someone disagrees with you or doesn’t like your comment it’s “censorship.” Here’s a great source for big words like that:
dictionary.com
I was wondering what was going on. I pulled up upon this scene, as I was meeting a bunch of friends at Shalhoob on Friday. Cops all around.
so it was the owner of Shalhoob and an associate that attacked the elderly man?
“From what I heard, the victim came to Shalhoob’s to serve a subpoena – a second attempt, as the first time he came to serve the subpoena earlier in the day, the owner had claimed to be someone else. The second time, the owner almost ran him over while fleeing, and a second person attacked him, stealing his hat, his phone, and his cane, as shocked bystanders were screaming.”
***If I find out that this is true, I will never, ever give them a dime of my money again.
I consider that the only piece of info we have other than what else has been posted here. If you have better information, please share it….since the bar is so low

You consider that proof? Pretty low bar there.
We all have as much credible information as you have – none.
Karma – you posted anonymously that Shalhoob’s is somehow involved and you are considering this information?
“From what I heard”
GeneralTree, unless GENERALTREE is your real name, you are posting anonymously which is what you are criticizing others for doing here. Are you willing to share your real name here? Thought so. The pot calling the kettle black.
“anonymously” here means hiding one’s ID, resulting in posting with an ID like A-1686087470
