An 83-year-old Lompoc man has been convicted of several counts of child molestation by a Ventura County jury.

John Carillo Chavez  was convicted on Friday by a Ventura County jury of five felony counts of lewd conduct and sexual contact with a child under the age of 14.

On Monday the same jury found that Chavez took advantage of a position of trust or confidence to commit the offense and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.

Chavez, already a convicted child molester from 1995, sexually abused the young victim at least five times at two locations in Ventura County between October 2001 and October 2002. The crimes were reported years later when the victim, now an adult, came forward and described the conduct.

California Penal Code 801.1(a)(1) allows for the prosecution of specified sexual assault crimes any time prior to a victim’s 40th birthday.

Deputy District Attorney Emily Reber, a member of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Sexual Assault Unit, prosecuted the case. “The prosecution team is grateful for the extended statute of limitations for child molestation that allowed this prosecution,” said Reber. “But for the tremendous bravery of the victim, justice could not have been done.”

Chavez was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday at the Ventura County Superior Court.

  1. 83 years old, huh? Retirement communities charge hefty entrance fees, $5,000 a month for a ~200 sq ft studio. You get 1 – 2 meals a day, clean sheets and towels once a week and if you need need “memory care” (have dementia), the cost doubles or triples. You pay medical/dental costs. They have lounges with TVs, board games/cards/puzzles, some fitness equipment. You pay for clothes & wash them. They may have a beauty/barber you pay, same with physical therapy. So all you have to do is diddle children and screw up their lives when you’re younger and you can get a retirement community with more benefits for free at a time of life you aren’t going anywhere anyhow? What a clever retirement plan and no-cost convenience for your family.
