It is a sign of the times that “Santa Barbara County will celebrate Juneteenth from Friday, June 16, through Friday, June 23” yet celebrates nothing for D-Day or Flag Day this month and much less for our country’s Independence Day in a few weeks.
8:22 would rather celebrate white people killing each other.
1:38, sounds to me like you are the real racist
P.S. your comment “a sign of the times” screams of an old white person who is mad about diversity and change (aka, racism)
Do you really think the City itself decided to do all of this on their own? No. This was community activism and organization by community members. They are the ones putting this all together.
If you feel so strongly about Flag Day and D-Day then form a nonprofit, gather others interested, petition the city and make it happen instead of complaining about a different holiday that is well worth celebrating.
8:22 – are you kidding? You have to be. July 4th is a MASSIVE event in this town. Hint: Juneteenth doesn’t have a 20 minute firework display at the beach, parade, flags, food vendors lining West Beach with an all day music/dance festival on the sand……
Stow the racism please.
D-Day? I mean, yes it’s good to remember D-Day, but most people who participated in D-Day are dead. (My father landed at Normandy when he was 18…he would be 97 if he were still alive). We don’t need to celebrate it?
Of course there’s a full July 4 celebration listed on the city website.
Why is anyone put off by this? It’s a little cringe that it’s not a celebration of the day but a week I guess, but who cares? Do you want a Fourth of July week? I do, but nobody is patriotic anymore. We should be celebrating the end of our slavery. Now we should be thinking about ending the slavery that is going on around the world that we are funding…
I grew up in Texas. We have Columbus Day, etc. The celebration of Juneteenth commemorating the end of slavery is a good thing,
Juneteenth is a holiday because it commemorates a day that began to set right one of our most, if not the most shameful chapters in our history as a nation.
It’s one of the deepest sins of humanity to traffic in human beings as if they are property.
That’s a little different than d day but considering we have President’s Day, Veterans Day, July 4th l, and Memorial Day, as well as D-Day and the anniversary of Hiroshima, it doesn’t seem out of proportion to have a week for Juneteenth.
