Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in Cuyama on Friday afternoon.
At 2:16 p.m., crews from the county, Cal Fire, Ventura County, and Kern County all responded to Ballinger Canyon.
They discovered a single family home had caught fire and spread to nearby brush. It was estimated to be 9 acres and spreading at a moderate rate of speed.
Named the “Dog Incident,” aerial resources were called in from Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit Helicopter 964, a Ventura County Fire Hawk, and air tankers.
Crews were able to stop the forward progress of the fire at 3:32 p.m.
Air tankers were released back into service and enginges from the US Forest Service arrived to assist.
GPS mapping clocked the blaze between 6 to 7 acres total. Additional resources have been cancelled and crews will remain on the scene to fully contain and mop up.
The cause is under investigation.
