SBCC 2017 Employees of the Year

Santa Barbara City College announced its outstanding staff members for the 2016-2017 school year. Marilynn Spaventa, Dean of Educational Services, was selected Outstanding Administrator of the Year, and Josue Miranda, Automotive Service & Technology Laboratory Teaching Assistant, was selected Classified Employee of the year.
In her more than 26 years at the college, Marilynn Spaventa has served as Dean to many departments at the college, most recently in Math, Sciences, Languages/ESL, International Students and Study Abroad. She is described by her fellow staff members as “intelligent, kind, hardworking and gracious,” and “boundless in her vision.” Marilynn will retire after the Spring 2017 semester.
Josue Miranda not only works Automotive Service & Technology, he is also a graduate of the program. In his 20 years as a lab assistant, he has introduced numerous students to the auto program, including English learners. Among his volunteer activities is regularly accompanying the SBCC Geology department on field trips where he performs vehicle and other repairs as needed. “My position keeps me engaged with our students and many of them are here to learn a career,” says Miranda. “Their success is our number one goal.”
SBCC’s Classified Employee of the Year is selected by a committee of fellow classified employees. Additionally, honorable mention winners are announced. This year’s honorable mentioned were: Program System Support Specialist for the Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) Loretta Chapin; Student Program Advisor, Dual Enrollment Program, Christina Lomeli; Security Coordinator Lorraine Valenzuela; and Admissions and Records Technician Blanca Waaler.
Honorable mentions for Outstanding Administrator of the Year were: Director of Academic Technology Support Jason Walker; Senior Director of International Programs Carola Smith; Director of Information Technology Jim Clark; and Dean of Educational Programs, Business, Melissa Moreno.
