Watchstanders at Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center received notification at 9:15 p.m., from the operator of the 24-foot sailing vessel, Snafu, reporting the vessel was beset by weather and experiencing a fouled mast.

Watchstanders immediately launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat boatcrew from Station Morro Bay to assist. Upon arriving on scene, the boatcrew determined that the weather was too hazardous to conduct a safe tow of the vessel into the harbor. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders immediately assigned a safety patrol and radio communication schedule to monitor the status of the vessel until safer conditions were determined at daylight.

At first light Tuesday, a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu was launched to assist. The helicopter crew conducted a hoist of both individuals and transported them to San Luis Obispo Airport, to awaiting emergency medical services from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

No injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard urges mariners to always:

  • Stay Informed – The public should be aware of weather conditions and monitor the progress and strength of currents through local television, radio and internet. Check the current and expected weather and water conditions before heading out, and be aware that weather conditions can quickly change.
  • Wear life jackets while on the water.
  • Always have a working marine-band radio on board.
  • Carry marine flares on board the vessel.
  • Ensure bilge pumps are operational and vessels are secure for heavy winds and rain.
