Millions of people across the globe are celebrating World Oceans Day today, and UC Santa Barbara is among them.
This year’s theme is “Our Oceans, Our Future,” and the focus is on finding solutions to plastic pollution and ways to prevent marine litter — a subject right up Roland Geyer’s alley. The industrial ecologist in UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science & Management has aimed his research at measuring the amount of plastic making its way to the world’s oceans.
UCSB is recognizing World Oceans Day by highlighting research being conducted by some of the university’s ocean scientists, including Geyer. Their shared goal: to preserve the world’s oceans, which cover nearly three-quarters of the planet and hold 97 percent of its water.
