Castillo Street Undercrossing Repair

Source: Caltrans

An emergency project to improve conditions on the US Highway 101 undercrossing at Castillo Street will begin on Monday, June 19.  This project will include the installation of a reinforced concrete slab which will be placed three to four inches above the current pavement and the water which accumulates beneath it.

This project will result in a full closure of Castillo Street from US Highway 101 to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for about two months. The southbound on/off ramps to US Highway 101 at Castillo Street will also be closed for the duration of this project.Motorists headed southbound may detour at the US Highway 101 off ramps at West Carrillo Street or Garden Street.

Local traffic near Castillo Street will detour onto State Street or Garden Street.

This project will improve the condition of the pavement where seeping groundwater has damaged the existing pavers which has resulted in a wet driving surface.  This long-term closure is necessary so the concrete slab will be able to cure without vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

Detour signs will be posted to assist motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists during this project.

The contractor for this $1.5 million project is Security Paving of Sylmar, CA.  This project is expected to be completed by the end of August.

All businesses including the Santa Barbara Harbor will remain open during this project.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
