At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017, a Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Coastal Patrol Bureau was on routine patrol when he witnessed a subject driving a red Honda Civic fail to stop at a red light in the busy downtown area of Carpinteria. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop and the subject, later identified as 57-year-old Carolyn Nordgren of Carpinteria, fled from the deputy at a high rate of speed onto Highway 101 northbound. A pursuit was initiated and additional deputies from the Coastal station responded to assist.
Nordgren continued to flee from deputies and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. For the safety of the public and all involved, the pursuit was terminated on Highway 101 northbound at Summerland when a Sheriff’s deputy successfully disabled the vehicle. A high-risk stop was conducted and Nordgren was taken into custody without incident. There were no injuries to any involved parties.
Nordgren was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $75,000 for violations of evading a peace officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content over .08% and driving on a suspended driver’s license.
The City of Carpinteria contracts with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office also works with the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reduce impaired drivers on the roads of Santa Barbara County.
