Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that a jury found Arturo Herrera guilty of the willful, premeditated, and deliberate first degree murder of his brother Enrique Herrera, in violation of Penal Code section 187. The jury further found true the special allegation that the crime was committed with the use of a deadly weapon in violation of Penal Code section 12022.
On July 4, 2016, the defendant bludgeoned his brother to death while his brother was sleeping in his bed at their home in Lompoc.
In commenting on this verdict, District Attorney Dudley stated, “It is thanks to the hard work of Detective Scott and the entire Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department that the defendant was arrested for this brutal and horrific crime against Enrique. This successful prosecution was due to the immediate and tireless efforts of Senior Deputy District Attorney Brandon Jebens and his prosecution team.”
The defendant will return to court September 20th at 8:30 a.m. before the Honorable Judge Lavayen in Department 8 of the Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Santa Maria to confirm the sentencing date currently set on October 11, 2017.
