Edhat StaffSanta Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that she has concluded her legal analysis of the February 12, 2017, officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Bryan Devin Carreno.
Carreno’s father had called 911 to report his adult son was acting strange and appeared to be under the influence of “something.” Additional 911 callers reported Carreno was jumping fences and entering neighbors’ homes. After a lengthy search involving a K9 unit and a helicopter with a spotlight, law enforcement found him inside a private residence on Russell Way that he entered without permission or knowledge of the occupants.
In response to announcements that a K9 officer would be deployed, Carreno exited the back door to a small patio with a kitchen knife and allegedly confronted multiple officers. The suspect ignored commands to stop advancing and to drop the knife before officers fatally shot him.

Noozhawk report has a lot more details. For holding a knife he was shot 20 times! Seems a little much in my opinion. His father called the police–that must haunt the man.

A man with a knife hopping around backyards, acting erratically, ignoring law enforcement commands and eventually advancing on officers? It really doesn’t matter what you “think” he would NOT have done. He did enough to cause officers to legitimately stop him from advancing further with a deadly weapon in hand.
I don’t care what you think either I am entitled to my opinion until they are outlawed in America which could happen then I guess I’ll be shot too.
I bet it would haunt him a lot more if he hadn’t called police and the knife-wielding man, entering neighbor’s homes, had killed someone else.
I wasn’t there and I don’t know whether the shooting was justified, but I do know that 999 times out of 1000 DAs declare police shootings justified even when they aren’t.
There’s a problem with police culture, which DAs are full participants in. These days, police are trained to shoot to kill when they feel threatened, and they are indoctrinated with an “us” vs. “them” mindset that justifies all sorts of aggression against the public and mutual defense of their behavior, whatever it is.
