Once the Sheriff’s Office has completed the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the decedent who was fatally injured this morning, February 20, 2018, in a shooting incident behind the Chumash Casino Resort in the 3400 block of E. Highway 246 in Santa Ynez. The decedent is 37-year-old Jose Guido of Santa Barbara. Next of kin has been notified.
Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Additional information regarding the incident will be released when it becomes available.
The Sheriff’s Forensics Unit is processing the scene and the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation to determine an official cause and manner of death.
The identity of the decedent will be released once next of kin have been notified. The identity of the Chumash Security Investigator involved in the shooting is not being released at this time due to the active investigation. We will provide an update as soon as we are able to release more information.

One person has died after a shooting at the Chumash Casino and Resort in Santa Ynez early Tuesday morning.
Around 2:15 a.m., an altercation began between a casino security guard and another male, it’s uncertain whether this person was a guest at the resort or a patron of the casino. The security guard shot the man who reportedly died at the scene. No further details surrounding the incident were immediately available.
The identity of the deceased and the security guard have not been released.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

We are the most violent nation in the world in terms of gun deaths. We watch violent movies and play violent video games. Seeing a dead body should be relatively normal for us.
That’s true, but every kid I know plays 1st person shooter games. And most of us see very violent movies compared to what I could see 50 years ago. I would say more people are used to this new standard than not. Where do you think these kids are getting practice for their mass shootings? The fact that they can kill so many people in such a short time is no accident.

We’re not the most violent nation in the world in terms of gun deaths, not even close. Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras all have significantly higher gun murder rates.

It is the intentional and foreseeable result of the gun manufacturers who design and produce guns like the AR-15 and accessory devices (eg high capacity magazines). THAT is the reason mass shooters are able to “kill so many people in such a short time.” But no, let’s blame video games, because God forbid we even consider discussing your precious guns. I can’t believe you seriously wrote that.
Will this be a gun issue or an excessive force issue? Are the security guards protected by Chumash sovereignty? Sad that another gun death has occurred in our county within a week of the last one.

“Speculating?” What did I speculate? This was a shooting. That’s a fact. My question is simply what happened. I never said anything about what I think happened. Simply wondering what happened.

Why does it only take ONE down vote to eliminate a comment? I know some people can’t help hating, trolling or using foul or abusive language as a way of life, so should be eliminated from any civilized discussion, but still–given how easily a few people are disturbed by anything that isn’t exactly what they believe, it should take at least three down votes.

Oh FRED, get your stats up to date. Columbia has been a lot safer than the US for many years now since the narco cartels have been corralled. Mexico on the other hand has regions where the narco gangs have created territories where lawlessness prevails and the same can be said for El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. But Brazil??? I’m surprised you didn’t include Syria, Niger and Afghanistan. I mean let’s get real here… gun violence in the US mirrors countries with lawless areas at war with their neighbours.

Mr Guido attempted to inflect serious bodily harm on casino patrons and security staff. His actions led to his death. Those who are opposed to protecting themselves with a weapon are free to wait for a man in a uniform with a gun to arrive. A gun to protect the officer’s life, your life is secondary. The police aren’t sacrificial lambs for the pacifist.

I realize it is easy to blame the gun but the FBI says 3% of our population (black males from15 to 35) do 53% of the murders in the US, usually with illegal guns. The US has a high gun violence death rate but if you remove 4 liberal cities like Baltimore, Chicago. New Orleans and New York from the stats. – the US would have a low gun violence death rate compared to the other countries in the world. Banning high capacity magazines sounds like a great idea but Columbine was done with 10 shot mags. Guns are not necessary to kill a lot of people – a terrorist in France killed over 100 with a stolen semi truck.
I just read there are more shootings in movies for kids than in adult movies.
One suspects that the “security guards” at the Chumash Casino are more like tribal police than the rent-a-cops employed in most places. That is, they are a lot more likely to use violence and assert authority than the guy at the 99 cent store.
Again we find the thought police protecting the Chumash even when no attack is made on them? Expressing a comment that the security guards at the casino are more like cops than rent a cops is hardly demeaning is it? So down vote this as well and confirm that the new Edhat policy empowers the forces of censorship to stifle public dialogue on even the most mundane of issues is some interest group finds it annoying.
Sea Dog, I wonder if one selectively (conveniently to bias desired results?) removes certain factors of the murder stats in these other countries would then U.S gun violence be back to being high compared to other nations. And there’s really no end to this type of manipulation of data to whitewash the reality of America’s gun fetish and culture of violence. Geesh, if you remove all the mass killings in the U.S. committed by white males …or remove those by perps of right-wing conservative ideology, then the rate of such mass shootings in U.S. isn’t really that high. 😉

Is a taser considered a “deadly weapon?” If not, I’m assuming there were extenuating circumstances that would warrant using deadly force by one of at least 2 security officers against one unarmed man.
