The UCSB Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, February 23rd 2018, at an undisclosed area on UCSB campus/ Goleta area. It will begin at 7:00 p.m. and run for approximately 8 hours. Traffic flow will be contacted by uniformed officers, who will be checking for alcohol/drug-impaired drivers. Officers will also check to make sure all drivers have a valid driver’s license.
The purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety; increase awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving; and to serve as a deterrent to potential impaired and unlicensed drivers during the UCSB academic school year.
Hopefully, they’ll be checking bike riders too. Way too many riding without lights at night. I’m sure a percentage of them are tipsy.
We’ve already made up our signs, and once we identify the location we will be warning people that are coming up on the checkpoint so that they can make a turn and go elsewhere. Four of us will be taking shifts. Last time we did this they confronted us but there was nothing they could do legally!
Having a checkpoint on Friday and as many cops as possible out on Saturday maximizes the amount of overtime that officers can get. Law enforcement authorities care far more about keeping their officers fat and happy with taxpayer funded overtime rather than effective enforcement.
Thank you for your service!
