Four months after the fires/mudslides, the Red Rock area in Los Padres is still closed to day visitors. I called the ranger to ask about the status (wanting to go for a day hike and swim), and he could not tell me when the area would re-open. The Corps of Engineers needs to evaluate the first river-crossing, he said, but there was no timeline on when this would be done.
Does anyone know why there is such a delay?
The problem with tax cuts is services suffer. Contrary to what the pundits will tell you, you can’t do more with less.
It has nothing to do with tax cuts. The government has been receiving record tax revenue for some time now.
What’s on display here is just plain good ol’ government service, which sucks. There is no good reason why it takes so long to get the road open every year.
I enjoy biking and hiking up the river when the gates are closed, don’t get me wrong. It keeps it much quiter and cleaner. I bike up to the lower pools when the gates are closed, and then hike up the river above Red Rock when they open.
But last year they didn’t get the road cleared of gravel and dirt from winter runoff until well after the prime river flow of spring had already long passed and the river started to moss up. And the debris on the road was easily removable. Nothing but lame excuses, and government inefficiency was the true problem, if you want to be honest about it. Same thing this year. Happens nearly every year. Has been for decades. Been sitting int he stands here as a spectator watching it for years. Its pathetic. Some measly river crossing on a river that hardly flows and they can’t even get it open.
