The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department is continuing work on local beaches to restore them to pre-emergency conditions.
The deposit of sediment from the 1/9 Debris Flow at Goleta Beach County Park and Carpinteria Beach at Ash Avenue ended by February 20, and crews groomed at both beach sites to push deposited material into the surf zone.
Additional work is necessary to address a sediment layer that formed within the sediment deposit sites. “It’s essential to break up this sediment layer to maintain the natural sandy beach,” said Maureen Spencer, Operations and Environmental Manager for the Public Works Department. “We are committed to returning the beaches to pre-emergency conditions as soon as possible,” Spencer added.
Regulatory agencies have been notified of the County’s plans and the County has received approvals. Public Works will begin work at Goleta Beach County Park on Tuesday, April 24. Work began at Carpinteria Beach at Ash Avenue on Monday, April 23. Work at each site is expected to be completed within one to three days. Crews plan to groom the sites and break up the sediment layer so it can be hauled away. If necessary, materials may be dispersed into the surf. The work is occurring this week to take advantage of low tides and to avoid potential grunion spawning.
