The Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center (SPARC) is seeking an emergency, short-term foster home for Jade, a seven-year-old dog that has lived at the SPARC shelter for the past three years and is now terminally ill with only days or weeks left to live.
Jade was rushed to a specialist veterinarian this week with a distended abdomen and difficulty breathing. It was discovered that Jade has Hemangiosarcoma, a rapidly growing, highly invasive type of cancer which has wrapped itself around her heart. Hemangiosarcoma starts in the blood vessels but tumors generally develop in the major organs. Symptoms include breathing difficulties, lethargy, abdominal swelling, pale gums, exercise intolerance, rapid heartbeat, appetite and weight loss, lameness, partial paralysis, seizures and sudden collapse.
Jade has only days or weeks to live. SPARC is providing hospice care for her for whatever time she has left but hopes a foster care provider who is home during the day and has no other pets will come forward to give Jade a loving home for the rest of her days. Jade could have a fatal heart attack at any time.
Anyone willing and able to foster Jade is asked to please call 805-525-8609 as soon as possible. Jade and SPARC also need funds to pay for her medical care. Please visit http://www.
SPARC is a No-Kill, No-Excuses, 501(C3) city pound and shelter in Santa Paula where every single animal arriving gets a second chance at life.
Okay, I can understand outrage at putting down perfectly healthy domestic pets just because there’s no room for them, but to prolong this poor dog’s life just so she won’t be euthanized is extremely cruel. Terminally ill humans get the “luxury” of hospice care, in which they may be drugged out in pain-free oblivion. Dogs apparently aren’t so fortunate. Better this poor animal die a painful lingering death just so the Santa Paula animal shelter can keep its “no-kill” status going. Spare me the hearts and flowers, SPARC. By not euthanizing this poor dog, you are doing NO ONE any favors.
This is horrible for this poor dog. Our dog had this and we had the sense to put him down so he wouldn’t suffer. Hemangiosarcoma tumors end up rupturing and pouring blood into the abdominal cavity, hence the pale gums. The emergency vet explained that when this happens the lungs fill with blood and the poor animal literally drowns in its own blood. This shelter is doing a terrible disservice letting this beautiful girl continue on this way. Poor sweet thing.
The more I dwell on this, the angrier I get. What is “humane” about letting this pain-ridden dog live out its final days instead of humanely euthanizing it? The Santa Paula “rescue” society members deserve to be horsewhipped. Yes, I said that and I mean it. To preserve its no-kill reputation, by god it’s not going to kill anything. If I iived in Ventura County I would never contribute a nickel to this hypocritical, awful organization.
Though their might be some quality of life left in the little darling why not let her enjoy the time she has left? Hopefully someone will step forward and help. Or maybe we should put everyone down that has a terminal disease.
I used to financially support PETA until learning the truth about how many tens or even hundreds of thousads animals they “put to sleep” each year. PETA is no friend to animals….they take your money so they can kill kill kill….very sick people they are.
