The Santa Barbara Public Library System seeks energetic volunteers to help with all aspects of the Summer Reading and Learning Program. The 2017 program, “Build a Better World,” begins on June 13 and runs through July 31. Adults and teens interested in explaining the program, enrolling participants, discussing books with children, and awarding prizes can sign up now.
Volunteer training sessions will be conducted at the Central Library. Volunteers who would like to engage with children at the Central Library are encouraged to choose and register for one training session. Volunteers who wish to participate at another library should contact their local branch for more information. Volunteers may reserve their space at a training by emailing lgonzalez@santabarbaraca.gov. Teen volunteers must be over age 14 to serve at the Central Library. Trainings will take place on:
• Thursday, May 18, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Tech Lab on the Main Level of the Central Library, 40 E. Anapamu St., Santa Barbara
• Thursday, June 1, 5-6:30 p.m. in the Tech Lab at the Central Library
• Saturday, June 3, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Tech Lab at the Central Library
• Tuesday, June 6, 3:30-5 in the Island Room on the lower level of the Central Library
• Monday, June 12, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Island Room at the Central Library
The annual Summer Reading and Learning Program is a library tradition that instills a lifelong love of learning by encouraging children to read and participate in events over the summer. Volunteer outreach efforts are supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Partners in Education, and the Friends of the Libraries. Teens earn community service volunteer hours for their efforts.
