Living Lives of Resilient Love

November 8, 2017 @ 6:00 am PST

“Living Lives of Resilient Love” uplifts student voices amidst political challenges.

Exactly one year after the controversial 2016 presidential elections, the country remains polarized along ideological lines. This duality is felt strongly on college campuses around the nation, as a profound spirit of activism and radical resiliency in response to white supremacy, DACA rescission, devastating hurricanes, free speech debates, wars, escalating international tensions, refugees, transphobia, mass gun violence and others. Given this, the Division of Student Affairs at UC Santa Barbara is proud to announce the “Living Lives of Resilient Love” series, a follow up to last year’s inaugural outreach initiative to foster dialogue and a sense of belonging on campus and in the wider community titled “Resilient Love in a Time of Hate”.

A Community Discussion will draw hundreds of students in a town hall format to strategize, showcase and learn from each other’s resiliency that has flourished amidst the social and political climate that has coalesced the year. The Community Discussion will take place in Corwin Pavilion on November 8th at 6PM, exactly one year to the date of the last presidential elections. The discussion will end with a candlelit community procession to Storke Plaza. All events are free and open to the public. Related activities will include workshops and classroom visits.

Margaret Klawunn, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UCSB considers the series an “opportunity for the UCSB community to come together for dialogue about the range of political and climate issues affecting our campus, the United States, and the world… This series continues the work we started last year as a collaboration between the MultiCultural Center, Student Affairs, and Professor George Lipsitz that was intended to conceptualize a counter‐narrative to the divisive US Presidential election. This year, as the challenges continue, we are emphasizing modeling resilient love, living lives, as a strategy for responding to hate.
