The SBLBC will celebrate an Open Bowling Day on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 10 a.m. to Noon at SBLBC located at Spencer Adams Park, 1216 De la Vina Street. The Open Bowls Day welcomes adults in the Santa Barbara business and residential community to come and try their hand at lawn bowling, tour the clubhouse, and meet the new club president Janet Napier along with SBLBC club members.
The Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club celebrated it’s 80th anniversary in October of 2017 at Spencer Adams Park. Both Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams and City of Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider presented proclamations commending the club that was formed in 1937, and shared what a great contribution its members have made to recreation in the downtown area of the Santa Barbara Community.
The City of Santa Barbara has been a sponsor of the SBLBC since its inception, and Jill Zachary, Director of Parks and Recreation, has commended the club on their fine contribution to recreation in the downtown area through the sport of lawn bowls. Jill has visited the club to take a private lesson and shared how much she enjoyed the sport, as well as her expert tutelage from past club president Sharron Adams.
The sport of lawn bowls has a long history beginning in England in the 13th century and continues to be enjoyed in Santa Barbara and throughout the world. Local artist Dita Joseph created a wall painting on the lanai of the club in 1994 which depicts Sir Francis Drake playing the game of bowls whilst the Spanish Armada were approaching their ship in Plymouth Hoe. The mural is an ongoing example of the history of lawn bowls and SBLBC. Contact Sharron Adams 805-618-8656 or 805-965-1773.
